baby alligator snapping turtle end of tail nipped

ripthesnapper May 03, 2004 12:15 AM

my brand new alligator snapping turtle for a couple of weeks seem to have a couple of nip spots on the end of the tail, i suspected that it was the crayfish doing it, but the day after i removed the crayfish, i seen a new nip mark on the tail, I am very worried, what could it be, what could have happened, and what can i do to treat the problem

Anything else living with the snapper? Any jagged rocks? If not, it could be an infection. Keep the water very, very clean. and be sure to provide basking spots. it should clear up on its own.

I guess it is possible that it is chasing its own tail. Make sure it has plenty of food. Supplying them with live fish not only provides sustainance, but enrichment. And stay away from those gross, bright orange feeders that they have at Petsmart and the like. Very unhealthy, diseased things piped full of dyes so they look pretty.

no, nothing eles is living with the snapper, i feed it rosie reds, and it has a basking cave but its not jagged, i just purchased a sulfa bath, and reptil would healing aid to see if it helps, its nipped to the point where the bone is exposed, since its a baby do u think the skin will grow back when the turtle grows? I am very concerned, i dont think its chasing its own tail, its a pig, it eats too much

rosies are ok. minnows are better and harder to find.
