Job Opportunities

grungpunker Jul 12, 2004 06:07 PM

Hi my name is Drew and I am currently living in Detroit Michigan. I have no schooling in herpetology other than basic biology and vertebrates classes in high school. I have experience with a lot of snakes including venomous, Dart Frogs, and lizards. I was wondering what kind of job opportunities are out there for me to pursue. I don’t mind moving given the right opportunities. I would really like to eventually do field studies on South American wildlife.

Drew,

If you are seriously giving consideration to making a career of herpetology, you should seriously consider seeking the minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree, within the realm of natural sciences. Of course, a graduate level education will carry more weight, thus offering greater opportunity.
In the not so distant past, your experience alone would allow you greater opportunity, though now, it is almost required you have the minimum of a BS to get your foot into the door of most zoological, museum and research institutions.
Without the backing of higher education, I’m afraid your employment opportunities may be limited to reptile specialty businesses, private herpetoculture or the importation industry.
However, do not give up entirely on employment within the zoological arena, as there are always the lucky few, who manage to squeeze in without the backing of higher education, though if there is any way possible for you to obtain such, I would highly encourage you to do so.

Best of luck to you,

Jeff
