newfroggyist Aug 10, 2004 09:30 PM

hi, im very intrested in either purchasing three adfs or acfs, and i need some guidance as to which, first, should i get a 5 or ten gallon tank and how many can fit in each comfortably, also wich kind need a filter or air pump, also it would be probably easier to breed acfs? right? and would it be ok if i put in a lighted ornament or a lighted hood, i really will provide the best home i can for these guys and im anxious to do it, as a beginner i really value your help, i like the adf's but they might be to hard for a beginner as myself please help me out

Dwarfs are supposed to have very nice personalities. And can survive at one gallon per frog, whereas ACF need 7-10 gallons per frog.

I'm glad to hear that. Many people keep African Clawed frogs in conditions that are much to small. In fact most expeirenced owners recommend taht while 7-10 gallons of water per frog, a twenty gallon tank is really best because of two things:
-Length for swimming
-Frogs are less stressed in groups

Often when kept in small containers african clawed frogs become stunted and develop various problems. So i kind of wince when I see people suggesting taht you can fit three ACFs into a ten gallon.

Nice to see someone else take an interest in the dwarfs. The 3 frogs you plan to get will be very comfortable in the 5 gallon.Make sure you have a filter that does not cause a whole lot of current. The frogs like their water to be still as possible. Also make sure you have a heater and therometer.I would also highly recommend that you take the time to learn about cycling your tank and doing it before you put your frogs into it.That will be one thing that will really get you off to a good start.
Also try to offer a fresh, varried diet.No freeze dried foods.Just frozen and live.
