Fish sharing an aquarium with ADF?

gallryserpentine Aug 25, 2004 12:30 PM

Hello there,

I am thinking about getting a couple ADF's, but am trying to do my homework on them first. I own a few snakes and geckos, so I know that research is mandatory!

Anywho, I have two fish already, a red Oranda goldfish and a betta. Both are housed seperately (obviously =)). I know that betta are aggressive, but I have read a couple of sites that say you can house ADF's and a single Betta together. I have also read that you can't (which I would agree with).

Same with goldfish- some say you can, some say you can't. There are also conflicts as to what types of fish are and are not compatible.

My question is this: what fish are KNOWN to leave ADF's alone? And does anyone have ADF's in a community tank with no problems? Are there any recommended sites with good reliable info on them?

Thanks so much,
Jacqui

I've heard you shouldn't keep fish with ADFs and I've heard it's fine. My experience is that it's fine as long as the frogs can get enough to eat - no aggressive eaters to contend with.

My betta fish is extremely aggressive, and he attacked rasboras, tetras, catfish, frogs, everything. So the betta lives alone and the frogs live quite compatibly (is that a word?) with a few cory cats and some ottos. There was a dwarf gourami, and they're mostly fine, but the frogs hid a lot.

Bettas will work fine with a ADF as longas teh ADF has a place to hide (Like a small flower pot) and he and the betta get enough room and food. For more information check aquaticfrogs.tripod.com They have a section on Dwarf frogs and bettas.

Like others I've heard both ADF's do and don't do well with other fish. I've seem them with dwarf gouramis. I keep mine with otto cat.s. But I've also had my frogs eat minnows, danios, tetras and the little catfish that eat off the bottom [can't remember the name.]

My frogs get fed regularly so I don't think it's the hungry issue. I've also had friends who had ADF's that would nip at the other fishes fins. I fed mine a variety of foods and only fish that are designated as feeder fish!

Good for you for doing research!

Thanks everyone for your input! For right now, I think I will just have them by themselves. I set up the aquarium (10 gallon)last night, but I haven't gotten the frogs yet. I hope the website that suggested water conditioner was right... as I added some in.

I called the petstore and they told me they only stock the froglets. Once they grow up a bit, I think I will try to introduce fish.

I can't wait =)

thanks again,
Jackie
