Found A Wood Turtle!!

Oldtime Oct 25, 2004 12:20 PM

I was out hiking yesterday in NJ and came across a wood turtle. Just thought it was a little odd. The temp has been getting down to the 30s & 40s at night. Shouldn't that dude have been hibernating . . .I hope it's OK!

Wood turtles love the cold weather. About a two weeks ago i was fishing and saw a wood turtle the water temp was about 55-57 degrees and it was moving fast. He was just working his way across the creek to the other side. Glad to see that there are wood turtles in Jersey. I live in south jersey and i don't think there are any down here. What part of the state were you in. I have looked for wood turtles in high point and stokes state forest but never come across any.

Wood turtles are among the most cold-tolerant of turtles and are often acive at very low temperatures. Don't be alarmed.
