HELP! -- ACF with strange disease

stitches120 Oct 26, 2004 09:44 PM

Over the past few days, we have noticed that the two hind feet on our frog appear to be constantly "closed" instead of fanned (we have had her for about 2 months). There is a lot of dead white skin on the feet/toes and it appears as though he is shedding excessively and is starting to spend a lot of time at the surface. It isn't happening yet with this frog, but with our last frog (which had the same disease at roughly the same age), he stopped eating, eventually developed red spots on the back/head and died within a couple of weeks. We change the water once a week, change the filter once every two weeks and use Koizyme regularly, so I have no idea what this could be.

Any information on suggested treatment would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks!

Your description suggests that the condition your frog has is similar to that of Nematode infection. Obviously, I have no way of knowing for sure. You will find further information about it at: http://www.xlaevis.com/diseases.html

I suggest that you transfer the frog to a clean container of fresh water at the same temperature. It doesn't have to be a tank. A black plastic bucket or something similar would be ideal. Use only enough water to enable the frog to stand up with its nostrils protruding out of the water. Place something over the top, such as a sheet of glass and keep the bucket in a shady, quiet place without disturbing the frog unnecessarily. Keep it there for a day then check to see if there's any improvement. If there is, change the water again and keep doing so until you know which way things are going. You have nothing to lose by trying this and sometimes, though not always, it does work with the symptoms you have described.

Hi! Your post is a bit old now so I don't know if this is relevant but you might try the people at the pipidae.net forum there seem to be quite a few pople on there that know quite a bit about the clawed frogs. Also, the people from growafrog.com (they sell those kits where you get a ACF tadpole) say on their website that they have a certain food that they sell for frogs that contain an antibiotic. Don't know if they will sell to people unless you can prove that your frog came from them but it may be worth a shot if it will save your froggies life.
