a little worried...

elmothefrog Dec 14, 2004 12:44 AM

My ACF, Elmo, is getting bigger, but is very pale and has some redness around her eyes, also, he hands are very dark. she lives with two other fish, a cleaner fish and a dwarf gourami. Im not sure if she's getting ill, or if there is anything i can do about it. but her looks are changing dramatically, she shed about two weeks ago. Her diet mainly consists of meal worms. they used to be "frog pellets" and bloodworms for a treat. She downs up to 3-4 mealsworms per night. Am i doing anything wrong? can someone provide me with some information?? help is appreciated. thank you.

paleness of fish or frogs is the result of something in the water quality... either a new tank, small tank, lack of filtration, lack of water changes. if the frog has redness around the eyes, there is ammonia in the water.

How would i go about getting rid of ammonia in the water? Any suggestions for better care? I'm going to be moving in a couple of days. I've moved with my frog before, and found it to be a relatively easy task, but she was smaller then, do you have any suggestions for a safe move? Do you think that feeding her strictly meal worms is bad for her health?

for ammonia, water changes is the only way to remove ammonia and nitrate. the ammonia does remove by itself through water cycling unless there's too much in the water. meal worms are a good source. If you're going to be gone for a few days just put a bunch of guppy feeders in the tank. They will eat the guppies when there's nothing left to eat. I usually put about 2 hundred feeders in my 10 gallon tank when going on vacation.

wow, thanks. another question i feel compelled to ask you, is...how big does an ACF have to be to eat feeder guppies? and can these feeder guppies be purchased at any pet store? are they pricey?

mrpacman Dec 19, 2004 09:28 PM

my 2 clawed frogs are 3 1/2 inches and 6 inches. I've also got several 2"ers that eat guppies as well. Even a 1" clawed frog will eat a guppy if it can fit in his mouth.
any pet store sells guppies.
usually about 15 guppies for a dollar.

Thank you so much, you've been a BIG help i think i'm going to get some guppies right now...

I got some feeder fish, and its really cool watching my frog gobble them up, though i do feel sad feeding her live food (those tiny fish are so cute!), but she seems to enjoy it. she at 4 of them so far...

I'm getting ready for the big move! tomorrow is the day!! its going to be a 4 hour drive, but it'd be worth it, I'm hoping to get my ACF (elmo)into a 250 gal. tank. hopefully she'll have fun thanks for your advice mrpacman.
