Blue Spiny Litter/Breeding

Solomon Dec 19, 2004 02:21 PM

I've had a pair of Blue Spiny's for 3 years now. Each year the female has had a litter of little ones. This year was an odd year. In February she gave birth to 21 babies - which was the largest yet. Only one didn't break out of his sac. Then again - in October of this year - she had another 21 babies. I'm curious as to how often this happens with them - as they usually hibernate starting in october and the birthing/breeding cycle continues. This year they're in full swing - eating up a storm like it's springtime already.

Just an odd year all round - I've kept them the same way for the last 3 years. Anyone else share similar findings?

I know that in some species babies become active about the same time adults hit the big sleep. I'm curious, what are you doing with the babies? Are you selling them?

Yes I am selling them - though there isn't much interest in them here(Ontario, Canada). The February clutch/litter has left the nest and I still have 15 from the october clutch/litter.

If they're live bearers is it a clutch or a litter?

I'm also surprised as my female gave birth in the end of Oct. and now I saw then head bobing and even him chasing her yesterday.

I had other things to do so I did not see the outcome. LOL

But I will know soon if Suessy the female loses her lovely shape again , hehehe !
