There are a few decent ones, as well as some written by people that clearly knew a lot more about one kind of herp than another. One that I do not recommend so much is "Reptiles and Amphibians for Dummies", it's kind of all over the place to me and sometimes suggests species that are too difficult for beginners while other times it neglects to include basics such as Ball Pythons and the like in it's information tables and subsequent text. It's not a bad book but you can do better.

One that I've seen and like is "Reptiles, Amphibians and Invertebrates" by Patricia Bartlett & Billy Griswold. It has a page or two on common herps you'll see in the pet trade, and some that aren't so common. Overall the information is very good though and it is a dependable book. Use Kingsnake, breeders' sites or other books to supplement information on reptiles you own or plan to but the above book is a good start and general overview of everything.

You can get books cheap off Amazon, and you can even support Melissa Kaplan's site (one of my two favorites, along with Kingsnake) this way: http://anapsid.org/supportsite/index.html
