I fed my ACF "Rosey Reds" which are basically a pink tinted minnow, until i found out that i should ONLY feed my ACF feeder guppies, because the rosey reds, or minnows or any type of goldfish would block my ACF's ability to absorb vitamin B. I have netted the guppies and pushed them into my ACF's face so that he can grab one quick, but this is very time consuming, and they are rather hard to catch...is there any other type of live food i can throw into the tank that would be easier for my ACF to catch and eat?? It took me forever to find feeder guppies ANYWHERE. i went to six places before i found a store that carried them...and i've spent three dollars on them, needless to say, i've just turned out dissapointed. what would you suggest?

Also, I read somewhere that you could feed an ACF canned dogfood or hamburger beef, is this true?

as per the dog food and hamburger, sure you can feed it, although it is very poor as a diet. The hamburger esp. as it is nutritionally imcomplete and has a Ca:P of appr. 1:23 when a 2:1 ratio is needed.

I wouldn't feed my dog most dog foods - too much crap as filler. Yuck.

I have been feeding my frogs feeder goldfish and occasionally rosies their whole life. My frogs are perfectly happy and healthy. I give them a dozen or so each per week. My girls are 3 years old and they have never had a problem, besides trying to eat rocks. They also enjoy catching crickets on top the water. I dump a dozen in and they go crazy.
I don't think feeding canned dog food is good for them. So many dog foods are made from left overs and fillers. Not much nutrition for the frog. There is a type of canned food that is safe for frogs to eat. It can only be bought at a vet clinic though. It is made by Hills Science Diet called a/d. I feed it to toads/frogs if they are sick and not eating well, but it is mixed with vits and meds.

If you add a variety to their diet they should be okay. try feeding them some floating foods or frozen foods as well so they are not eating so much fish. An occasional pinkie might be a treat for them. I give mine one every couple of months.

I so not know if I am right, but I have 2 Albino ACF ina 15 gallon aquarium and I constanly have feeder guppies in there. I am making a stab at reproducing my own feeders because the pet store here locally in always running out of them. That is what is motivating me to reproduce my own. Plus I can save a couple of dollars.

I have also noticed that it seems most of the feeders get eaten when no one is around (ie at night).

My girlfiend and I thought that we had a male and female, but we ae starting to think that both are female. I want to make a stab at breeding these also....we'll see.

Anyway, mine have no problem eating the guppies. The problem I did have have was with White Clouds. I still have 3 uneaten ones that are about 3 months alive now (in the tank). They are now part of the scenery. But as for the guppies I have had no problems.

someone on this forum (not sure if its true) told me that having fish as a main diet isnt a good idea. With my frog, he cant catch anything for the life of him. so maybe one out of 15 fish get eaten within a week or so. I force them in front of him and he grabs them that way, but, being a college student, i sometimes dont have time to do this.

I find it very hard to find nutritious food for my ACF at a lot of petstores around here. I did find tonight some fortified bloodworms in a flat pack. Bloodworms are necisarilly used for treats, but the person at the petstore said that since its got the vitamins in it it should be okay for regular feeding. Elmo (my ACF) is getting too old for the little tadpole/frog bites. he needs bigger meals and something a little more substantial for his diet then fish all the time. He seems very partial to live food. He spits out the shrimp pellets i drop in front of him....what a picky eater! Anyway, i appreciate your reply.

I have also heard that feeding them only fish is bad, but mine are healthy. The bloodworms are good, but they are expensive and the majority go into the filter too. I don't mess with them.

Anyways, there are pellets specifically made for ACF. I have not tried them yet, but plan to soon. You can order them online by the pound, and they are not terribly expensive. You order them at Xenopus.com. The pellets are larger and come in the sinking form for the bottom feeding frogs.
