A sad story with (hopefully) a happy ending

Hi everyone,
I was at a horse farm today, when I saw a ten gallon aquarium in the cold office of a barn. I looked in there, and saw a 1" or so Red Earred Slider in about a half an inch of water and on otherwise unadorned tank. I felt sorry since it must have been cold in there, but I was shocked when I saw a layer of ice on the surface, some ice actually on the turtles shell. I looked at the turtle, and he moved. I called the barn owner (who runs a summer camp for kids and gets animals for them, and doesn't care for them in the after season) and let her know I was taking him home. I slowly warmed him up and provided him with all the basics, he looks good. Don't worry, I've kept RES in the past and know what to do. Its sad that some people can do things like that, this turtle hasn't had a proper heat lamp since early summer, if ever. They are, when smaller than 4", actually illegal in Kentucky except for educational purposes. This same person had three rabbits crammed in a cage in the open barn a few weeks ago, and a lady who rode there saw them in way subzero temps with no food or water, on Christmas eve (no one around until after Christmas), and took them home. A few hours later, one had seven babies.

Im glad the baby ended up with a good home. They are actually illegal everwhere in the US if they are under 4inches, i think. Good luck with your new pal!!!!
