Scale recomendations please?

jasonw Jan 21, 2005 03:09 PM

Hi. I have been looking for a scale to use for measurements for my research. I am finding out fast that I need to know exactly how much I will have to weigh to know exactly what scale to get. I believe the larges specie I will need to measure would be an adult Elgaria multicarinata. Can anyone tell me about what one weighs so I know what scale to get? Thanks in advance.

I don't know what a full-grown Elgaria weighs, but it's probably less than 100g. In that case, a 100g Pesola scale should serve you quite well. As you start doing more research, you'll want to expand your collection of scales, and get larger (to at least 1000g, unless you're working with desert tortoises, in which case triple that) and smaller (10g) scales. You'll want the smaller ones, because as you go down in size, precision goes up. Look at Ben Meadows Suppliers, Forestry Suppliers, or just do a google search for "Pesola." Also, when weighing your specimens, use the lightest bag possible to minimize error. Those fruit and vegetable bags that they give away at the grocery store work well for a lot of critters-
Good luck-
Eric
