Spiny Lizard-- Girl or Guy???

MDFaduly Jan 25, 2005 07:43 PM

OK I was told I have a Gal lizard...In fact I was told the day I bought her that she was gravid...How long does it take for them to lay and how can I tell if she is or is just fat! What little I could find on line says she may be a She but I would like to know how to tell them apart so I can get a mate for this Zard... Is there and easy way to tell on spinys???? Thanks Cat

Most spiny lizards have clear sexual dimorphism, i.e. they are colored differently. If you know what species you have, it's easy to look up pictures of a female and a male such and so.

Males generally have brighter coloration, but you really need to know the species of your little gal first.

Yes it would greatly improve your answer if we knew the specie you speak of. If you don’t know describe it to us in as much detail as possible and I am sure one of us can figure our what you have, Or at least narrow it down to be able to tell if its male or female.

All the Sceloporus / spiney lizards that I'm aware of can also be sexed by scales and pores regardless of the species. If you flip them over, males have a pair of enlarged scales in the fold just past the vent. Females lack these scales. Mature males will also have well developed pores along the underside of their rear legs. These will be much less developed in females.
