Red Foot Outdoor Housing

imbriav Apr 17, 2005 06:42 PM

I could use some help with two questions:
1. I'm building an outdoor pen for my two Redfoot's after a long winter indoors in NJ. They have come through the winter in good shape. What is the best substrat for the bottom of the pen? Mulch, Peat Moss, soil , etc.
2. I also have two eastern box turtles that have come out of hibernation. Would I be making a mistake to put the Redfoots and the Easterns together in the pen or is it important to keep them seperated?
Thanks
V

NEVER put T. carolina in with your redfoots.. (they are the only turtle that get's sick being around each other).. I may be exaggerating.. you get the idea! I don't have anything in with mine.

I would plant clover.. and provide their "humid-hide" with cypress mulch.. it retains moisture well. You can't make it too wet for redfoot tortoises.

Thanks very much for your advise. I will not intergrate the Redfoots and Eastern's. Today I planted the clover seeds , and have ordered the cypress mulch for the enclosure.

Thanks again,
V

Where did you order the cypress mulch from? You can't find anywhere here in California.

Sorry I did not get back to you sooner. I have been traveling on business then gone on vacation. Here is where I get the Cypress mulch. Big Apple Herpetological 1-800-922-7753
www.bigappleherp.com They sell an extensive variety of reptile products and I have found them very reliable.

Hope this helps you out,
V
