Puking up super worms

DivaDeb Apr 26, 2005 10:13 AM

My sweetheart Splenda (african fat tail)loves super meal worms. I only feed them as a treat now and then. Last nt she gobbled down 3 super worms about 20 minutes later I hear this scarey noise and Splenda is throwing up the worms. Sickest thing Ive ever seen. She seems fine today, she ate some crickets and holding them down. I have heard romars about super worms, that they dont die right away and can bite the gecko's insides. Does anyone know if this is true? The only thing I can think of is maybe they were wiggling around inside her tummy or even biting her and made her puke. This is new to me, anyone have the same problem?
concerned..

Deb, I don't feed supers, so not sure if I can help. My two are strictly cricket eaters. Were they whole when they came back up, or partially digested? Has she eaten that many at once before? Might just be too much in her stomache at one time. Were these larger than the ones she's eaten in the past? Don'tcha hate gettin' questions back when yoiu ask a question? Sorry.

I do feed Zoophobas "super worms". I raise my own, so I have a lot to select from and I choose those that are freshly shed, they will appear near white rather than the normal amber with dark ends. I think they are a good choice, as they are active and trigger a good feeding response, are easy to raise and appear to be a good food source. Ron Tremper, a legendary breeder, uses them extensively. However, my fat tails too have regurgitated them, but usually it is the old animals that have eaten a lot at one sitting. I suggest feeding freshly shed and in moderation, not more than 2 or 3 at a time. They should be a part of the diet, not exclusive. The chitonous, horny skin of worms may be an irritant, but I am not sure, I have just heard that dogma over the years. Same with Tenebrio (meal worms). Good luck, Vic

of my lizards, especially collared lizards. They sometimes wolf down a few also, and will throw them up. Many times it is that they ate them to fast, or too many, try giving one and see what happens.

Then later give another, space them out. Also some lizards just seem to have a harder time digesting them.
Superworms however are easier to digest than regular meal worms, they are high in chitin, that hard outer shell.

I would just cut back and try that!

I like her name, Splenda, CUTE! Real Sweet, heheheeh
