question on eastern painted

phishnuts May 07, 2005 05:13 PM

I have a large, well very large oudoor enclosure with a pond. It has a few different kinds of turtles in it. One being Eastern Painted turtles. They are rarely in the pond the are alway buried in the mulch somewhere, Is this normal? Will they still mate while acting this way?

Hmmm there could be many reasons why the painteds aren't staying in the pond. What other species are in there? They may not be happy mixed with another species, the others could intimidate them. Frankly this is why I never mix my herp species, fighting & disease transmission are major concerns when species are mixed so to avoid problems & my own worrying, I just don't do it.
Water temperature, water quality could be things they don't like. What about ambient temps? Is it warm enough during the day where you are?
What about food? What are you feeding them? Are they getting enough to eat?
Ok I'll thinking about this one for a while...
