STANDINGS - how messy?

dpdesign May 18, 2005 06:38 AM

I'm thinking of setting up a nice display tank for a pair of Standings. 2 things would sway me away from getting them though, and I'd be interested in hearing your opinions/experiences:

1. in a melamine tank with glass doors, would the standings be constantly clinging to the glass and pooping on it? I've seen grandis tanks in pet shops where there is crap ALL OVER the glass. That would really be inconvenient to keep clean.

2. how skittish are they? I just got rid of a desert iguana because he was constantly escaping even when I only opened the glass door a crack. Little bugger would wait for me to openthe cage and - VAVOOM!

1. Any animal will poop on the walls if it spends most of it's time hanging on the walls. Providing plenty of things to climb on under the lights will lessen the chance of them pooping on the walls but it will still happen time to time.

2. Day geckos are fairly skittish but they usually don't try to leave the tank unless you leave the tank open. I have 2 standing's and they by far have the most interesting personalities.

I love Standingi!! They have the best personalities!

All my geckos poop right on the front glass. But if you clean it daily, the cages still look nice.

what kind of enclosure do you have? Do you have lots of things to climb on and hide in? If you do, why would they still poop on the glass?

I'm torn between the beautiful Standings in a naturalistic tank versus getting a pair of nigerian uros. I really like the idea of Standings but am afraid they will escape and/or poop on the glass too much. I was going to build a 30"tallx30"wide by 15"deep melamine tank with sliding glass front doors. Snake plant, slate rocks to climb on. bamboo sideways and vertical. With all that would they STILL cling to the front?

In some ways that is easier than cleaning poop off rocks and bamboo all the time...

sometimes it depends on the basking site if you put the basking site toward the back they will usually stay around the light.but i still always get some poop on the front glass it all depends on when they are ready.

i have found that it is much easier to clean the poop from the front glass, that way you're not pulling the whole cage apart every time you clean. It's also less stressful for the geckos.

if the fact that they go on the glass bothers you that much, maybe they're not the species for you.
