PICTURE of my new female Greek Tortoise

PATMAN May 29, 2005 09:32 PM

Last year I told myself I was done adding any tortoises to my collection. Today arrived the 3rd tortoise I have bought this year!

She is a beautiful Greek tortoise who I hope to mate next year with my male Greek. I was told by the seller that this tortoise had mated this year and laid 3 eggs in April. Do you think it possible for her to lay more eggs this year from that mating?

Yes, that is very possible. Tortoises and many other reptiles are famous for storing sperm, an adaptation for making the most of infrequent mating encounters in sparse wild populations. I assume fertility decreases over time, so if you are serious about breeding you should seek a male of similar type. You should definately provide a suitable nesting site just in case. Good luck, Vic
