Grandis eating his own tail?!

holmesese May 30, 2005 05:27 PM

My male giant day gecko has been eating his own tail, it started with a small injury (I believe from some unsecured bamboo) At first his tail was kind of mashed at the end and he ate that off. After he bit it off the wound appeared just like a normal tail break off and the tail began to regenerate. Then he bit off the part of the tail that had begun to regenerate, now he is chewing farther up his tail. Any suggestions?

I had a similar problem with my female standings. I took her to the vet b/c I was HORRIFIED when I saw her pull of a portion of her tail, part of which was a regen from before I had her. The vet told me that one of the plates in her tail was most likely broken and irritating her and so she bit it off. She didn't eat it though, just dropped it. This may be the problem with your gecko.

If it happens again, you might want to see a vet.
