Everyone, Do your Redfoots whistle when breathing.?

Linda G Jun 20, 2005 04:13 PM

Mine was doing it pretty loud yesterday. No sign of illness
but just found it to be strange.

Thanks in advance

If I scare my torts or pick them up suddenly they make a whistle like noise.

he doesn't whistle with every breath or anything like that, but if he's in "alert mode" (looking up, throat pulsing, and arms pumping), he breathes more heavily and it's often whistley, though the extent varies. at first i thought that he might be ill, but he has no symptoms of illness, so i'm guessing that maybe he sometimes gets a booger or a food particle in his nose that causes it...

as long as you're keeping your redfot at good temperatures, he's eating well, has his normal activity level, and has no signs of runny eyes or nose, i personally wouldn't worry.

no signs of illness. I noticed him doing it as he breaths.
It happens when he is very alert.

Thanks

Yeah, my adult male does the same, particularly when he's extremely curious or foraging for food. They seem to really rely on their sense of smell when it comes to deciding if something is edible or not.
Even if it's something he loves to eat, like a banana, for example, he still makes sure to smell it at least 10 times before taking a bite...just in case!

My female does that also, I took her to the vet and they couldn't find anything wrong with her.

Mine 4-yr-old whistles when she is REALLY interested in something or if my husband comes in the habitat area (she likes HIM more than me, LOL). I was worried at first, but the vet said it was just a sign that something really intrigues her!
