Best terrestrial substrate?

I have a pair of Herpele squalostoma, and
Ichthyophis kahtaoensis. I have kept both on a pre bagged topsoil in tall sweater boxes for 3 years and have been on a diet of medium crickets. I use to use Carefresh, but it tends to get black mold when damp and smell after a while. What is currently being used as the ideal substrate? Thanks----------Mark
