I have a 10 year old daughter that wants one but am unsure of requirments, but have a pretty good idea. I want to make sure to do it right the first time though. Can anyone please offer some advice who has experience with them? Thanks.

These guys are great. Very intelligent, pretty, and become personable. Just make sure that a turtle is also what YOU want since your daughter is only 10. Children sometimes lose intrest in things once the 'new' wears off . ~Christy~

I dont reccomend a turtle for a 10 yr old.
Ornate wood turtles requirements are HIGH and expensive as are ALL TURTLES.
You need a large tank, 75 gal or bigger, the ability to keep the humidity high, feed fresh food not commercial food..including LIVE earth worms, and other bugs. Plus a water tub with gets dirty quickly...even WITH filters.
I dont think a turtle is good for a 10yr old. (my son is 10...he wouldnt.)
Maybe a small rodent, rats are fantastic. they dont smell, come when called and are easier to feed and care for.
No need to worry. Realistically, the Turtle is for me. The daughter part is just a subtle smoke screen to get the purchase ok'd by the significant other. I kept quite a few "hard to keep" Reptiles including Emeralds, so the Turtle should be considerably easier. Just want to make sure I have the requirements right and give my daughter the chance to participate at the same time. Thanks.
ok if realistically for you then that's cool. go to my site, www.buslady.com and find the Ornate Wood turtle link at the lower left and you can see my pair and read what i learned about them.
i have alot of tank pics so yo ucan get an idea of what htey need to live in
