Is something wrong with my redfoot?

Gpoop Jul 13, 2005 03:45 PM

I've had my baby redfoot since november of 2004 and he's never eaten everything I give him. I've read that babies will eat and eat and eat but mine never seems interested in any food. I usally turn on his lights at 9am and feed him at 11am. I give him romaine, escarole, strawberries, blue berries, kiwi aswell as Muzri(spelling?) tortoise diet 2 times a week. I feed him on a coffee can lid. I don't give him a lot of food at all. I was thinking maybe I give him to little of food to the point where he can't see the food? His temps on the hot side are between 80 and 90 and the cool side is 75. The humidity is usually between 65-90 percent. Do you think theres something wrong with him? I have a russain tortoise too, which eats everything I put in front of him!

Does it seem generally alert? Are you giving it a good water soaking every other day or so? Is it pooping on a regular basis? Do you see it eat anything?

YES!! I've seen it eat but not much. LIke one or two bites of something. I soak him everyday. When I pick him up he seems alert and he's poop's everytime I soak him.

Everything you discribed sounds pretty normal. As long as your hatchling/yearling is active and is producing waste every day or so, it must be eating OK.
Some species do eat more than others and so comparing them isn't a reliable indicator of health. For instance, I recently had some hatchling I. elongata and they ate, literally, three times what my hatchling redfoots ate even though they were the same age and size. The elongata would also eat all day long if you would let them. It was a real shock to me to have hatchlings gorge the way they did. But then, they also grew at a much faster rate than the redfoots too.
