my new standings day gecko (long)

hornedfrog Jul 19, 2005 09:56 AM

I posted this on the general gecko forum but I think I might get a better response here. I rescued a juvenile standings day gecko a few weeks ago and want to make sure my setup and care are okay. I have him in an 18 gal tall aquarium with a screen lid. The substrate is a layer of pea gravel, covered by a layer of potting soil, covered by a layer of reptile bark. I have a small bromeliad and small Sansevieria planted in the substrate. He also has a half-log hide and several vertical and horizonal bamboo branches to climb on. I am also using a UVB lamp and night lamp on top of his cage. I am monitoring temp and humidity with gages in the cage (humidity is usually 50% but rises to around 70% for short periods after misting, which I do about every other day). The temp at the bottom of the cage is 80 degrees. I will measure the temp close to the heat lamp as soon as I get another thermometer. I feed him about 6 small crickets every 2-3 days and give him baby food mixed with calcium powder 2-3 times a week. Do I need to feed him more often? Will he outgrow this size tank when he is full grown? Sorry this is so long but I want to make sure I am taking care of him properly. Thanks in advance for your help!

Well it sounds like you have done your research! Your tank is fine for now, you may want to move to something alittle bigger when it gets bigger. They are a pretty big gecko at 8 plus inches when fully matured. For feeding, try feeding crickets every other day and in between those days give it baby food. If you start seeing crickets that have not been eaten, bump it down to 4 or 5 crickets instead of 6. This way you can monitor how much they eat. This is what I do with my geckos and it seems to work pretty well. Now all you have to do is post some pics! Good luck with your new gecko.

One recommendation, mist twice a day, every day. They will drink from a water dish, but this also gives them a little extra something to drink. Also, they need a bit more humidity than what you're giving yours.

If this is your first standings, you're going to love it! They have the best personalities. I can't get enough of them!
