Sick Adult Male Redfoot

pavochavo Aug 02, 2005 06:29 PM

I recently picked up an adult male Redfoot Tortoise at a local reptile show. He was sick there and it broke my heart. I think he has a respiratory problem, however I am unfamiliar with treating these problems in a red foot. I have never had that problem with any tortoise that I've owned. Basically he sneezes a lot and has watery eyes on occasion. I have given him two separate heat spots with varying degrees of heat. He has a humidity hide box also. He regulates his temperatures just fine and I feed him properly. Does anyone have any suggestions to help make him feel better? I am not experienced with Redfoots. Only Pancakes.

Thanks,
Aaron P.

I wouldn't feel bad that you do not know how to treat your sick turtle. While plenty of people in this forum have knowledge and experience on the topic, your veterinarian is the only person qualified to tell you what is wrong and how to treat it. You are on the right track by optimizing husbandry. With sick tort's raise the total ambient temperature just a few degrees to help produce a fever.
See your vet in the next day or two and he/she will most likely take a sample of exudate to find out what bacteria is causing all the problems, and what antibiotic it is most susceptable too.
