I tried for hours to do this on my own but I can't be sure about anything that i have found. There are no hinges of any type. What do you all think about this guy? Thanks in advance for your help!

Dude, your picture is way too dark.
There's no way to tell what that is.
Can you get a better photo?

But something tells me the word mauremys is going to figure prominently in this thread.

I wish i could get a better picture but this thing is very shy and wont come out unless its under water and feels safe. So hopefully someone can work with this. There isnt really any color to it. A black shell with black skin, and relatively bright yellow on the head.

Well for one thing you could increase the lighting.

If i had to guess i'd say Mauremys mutica.

(look at photos on the web, its actually a very variable species, see if any look like your turtle.)

But you really need clearer pics.

what does the plastron look like?

erico Aug 22, 2005 11:55 AM

If it is truly black, it could be the flat-shelled variant of the Malaysian Box Turtle, Cuora amboinensis. Most specimens have a very high-domed shell like an American box turtle, but ocassionally the flatter-shelled variants turn up.

Check the plastron. If it has a hinge it is definitely Cuora and not Mauremys.

Definitely Mauremys mutica. Also, having included in your first message that it had no hinges would help in confirming this. In my opinion, the head isn't shaped properly to be C. amboinensis, and the front legs are too robust/thick to be C. ambo as well. Hope that helps.

... the possibility it was Cuora amboinensis. The head strip is typical for Maremys mutica (aka nigricans).
