spotted lacertas?

lizard66 Aug 18, 2005 01:42 PM

Yesterday, I walked into a Petsmart to pick up reptile supplies.
I peeked into one of the cages to see what was called a spotted lacerta. I have searched for information for these lizards, but I could never find any. How big do spotted lancertas get? I also want to know how to keep them. I am very interested in getting one of these guys, but I would like to know information on them before I buy one.

Thanks,
lizard66

Your "spotted lacerta" is most likely an Eremias suphani. They hail from Iraq, Iran, Turkey, etc. They require a desert setup but are notoriously hard to keep alive for more than a few months. They are absolutely one of my favorite lizards, but despite the best care, they just don't seem to thrive. It has been suggested to me by a leading breeder of lacertas that the abyssmal conditions under which these little guys are shipped--crowded, without food for weeks, etc.--sets them up for doom even if they appear to be healthy at the time of purchase.

Thanks for the reply. I guess that if they are hard to take care of, I should leave them alone. I'm glad for the info, because I might have made a bad decision of getting one.
