Question about natural vivarium and mixing species

joeysgreen Sep 01, 2005 06:17 AM

Hey everyone, my first time visiting this forum. I'm a regular in the herp health forum.

I've had a phelsuma m. madagascarensis (is that the right spelling?) for a long time now, but he's in a relatively small and sterile enclosure. I have a naturalistic vivaria that is in it's bi-yearly rebuild that is 1/3 shallow water with 2 fire bellied newts in it. I am considering adding my phelsuma to it when it's done. My reasoning is that the two species use different niche's in the enclosure and wouldn't stress each other out. The phelsuma would definately benefit from the natural vivaria. I also have a gargoyle gecko. In the same position as the phelsuma. Being nocturnal, will it and the phelsuma be in competition or any other stressfull arrangement?

Thanks everyone, and nice to meet you

Ian

usually the rule of thumb is if you are going to mix, only mix species from the same place ie. goldust gecko with golden mantellas, both from madagascar.
good luck

The answer lies in your vivarium. No you can't "mix" them, but if set up properly, they can live in the same enclosure without getting in each other's way. Always begin with well conditioned captives, and species that won't find a predator/prey scenerio.
