Co-worker found a dead turtle near Lake Ontario

star-raider Sep 12, 2005 08:37 AM

This Turtle was found in Toronto along Lakeshore Blvd. I haven't had any luck iding it with any typical species images from my area, I am wondering if it is an invasive species, escpaed pet, or perhaps an escapee from a restaurant. Does he look familiar to anyone. I have not seen the specimen in person, only received a photo from a coworker, however I have asked if there were any colours not evident in the photo and was told, "no".

All of the pictures and specimens of snapping turtles I've seen have fairly rough shells. From all I can see on the photo, this is a smooth shell.

From what I see, it looks like a pretty large, old snapper. Old snappers have smooth carapaces. If you could get a size on that specimen, it would be helpful.

Sorry, been home sick last couple of days. My co-worker said at the time it was "so big" holding his hands apart about 30". I have seen one when I was a kid that was bigger. Only the head poking up though the rest of him was hidden, thought it was a body in the pond until it moved. If the shell tends to smooth out over time that would explain it and the the rest seems in line. Thanks.

For that description. I know a snapper when I see one!

Muds don't get that big. It's a snapping turtle.
