What kind of turtles are these?

ClimateCreator Sep 15, 2005 01:26 PM

And I think one of them has an eye problem, we got these turtles at the White Plains Reptile show, and were told they were central American wood turtles. I do not doubt they are some kind of wood turtle, but they do not match ANY of the pics I seen of those turtles, I need to know for sure. Sorry for the huge pics but I wanted to let everyone see the details they need to help, if you need a plastron shot please let me know.

Thanks in advance,
Rich

Those are Hingeback Tortoises of the genus Kinixys. I'm not sure on the species but i'm guessing they are Forest Hingebacks. Ask for more info in the tortoise forum.

Your animals are Home's hingback tortoises, Kinixys homeana. They come from tropical zones of west Africa. Temperatures should be moderately warm (low eighties F) and humidity should be very high. They will appreciate shallow water in which to soak. Try canteloupe, mango, and plenty of soft greens such as redleaf lettuce to get them started eating.

These guys are very popular as food within their native range. The stragglers that make it into the international live animal trade are often in very poor shape, which the specimen pictured with the rough eye seems to be. Parasitism and dehydration claim most imports before they become established. Good luck with yours.
