A gift lizard

ChaoticCoyote Sep 19, 2005 10:18 AM

A year ago, I bought a G. validus without having much idea of what I was getting into. "Clyde" has become a very nice office companion -- he sits on me while I work, and he has a very pleasant personality.

A second G. validus has just joined us, a gift from a pet store that couldn't sell it. She had been pruchased at the same time I'd bought Clyde, and they were both wild caught together. Of course, one could have been captured in Gambia and the other in South Africa, but at least they "knew" each other previously.

We have an excellent local reptile vet, and we'll be monitoring the pair closely for conflicts. Both are quite strong and healthy, so we're not terribly concerned, just cautious.

The current habitat is about 5sq meters, and includes a new rock garden (well-constructed; it won't collapse.) The new lizard, called "Cassie" -- they says it's female, but I haven't confirmed -- was very nervous at first, but she calmed quickly and settled into a spot in the rocks.

Clyde seemed unaffected by the newcomer, and he's now settled under the rocks near Cassie.

Over the last year, Clyde has become quite handlable and calm; I suspect Cassie may do the same with the same care. Or at least I hope so.

Scott,

Good luck with the new addition. It's tough enough to find G. validus for sale [at least in the states], hopefully you do have a 1.1 pair. Maybe you'll get lucky and see some mating behavior and possibly even eggs. I'd keep a suitable nesting spot available just in case. With my Plateds, I've always provided a shallow plant pot saucer [usually about 10" diameter], filled almost to the top with either peat or Bed-a-Beast kept moistened. The advantage to the saucer is that you can position it underneath a rock overhang or similar protected area in the cage and the if you see eggs have been laid you can remove the saucer to recover the eggs without disturbing their orientation.
