Brazilian lava lizards

blues_lover Sep 26, 2005 05:14 PM

I'd like to show off one of my recent hatchlings, a Brazilian lava lizard (Tropidurus itambere). This one was from my first clutch, hatched Sept. 19.

I realize this isn't exactly the correct forum for these, but there really isn't a Tropidurinae forum. Quite frankly, most Tropidurids are basically quite similar to Sceloporids in niche and general morphology, so....

That’s an absolutely beautiful lizard. If not for the colors and your description I would say it was a Sceloporus. Good work, very nice

They're very similar to Sceloporus undulatus, but show some marked differences from the Sceloporids in general, such as lacking femoral pores. However, they show fairly strong sexual dimorphism, particularly on the abdomenal surface. Male dorsal patterning tends to be much more profound, primarily from a darker ground colour. Unfortunately, my photos don't do them any justice as the faces on these guys have some really nice blue and orange tinges.
