Taking indoor Box Turtle outdoors

geauxldmember Oct 14, 2005 12:41 PM

Weather permitting, is it ok to bring your indoor kept turtle outdoors so it can get some real good Sun?

I'm just talking about taking it's whole enclosure and putting it out like on a back porch.

thanks

Natrual sun would be great for your turtle. However, put it's cage in an area where he can retreat to shave from the sun, and never leave a reptile outside in a glass tank they will cook! Your best bet is to build a pen for your turtle that they cant escape. This way he will be able to choose between the sun and the shade, catch bugs to eat, and feed on grasses (beware of pesticides. Nothing is better than natrual sunlight!

Thanks for the advice. Right now the indoor setup is a good size rubbermaid tote. My kids have an old sandbox (in the shape of a turtle) that I was thinking of drilling some holes in the bottom for drainage and filling it up with some potting soil and bedding, etc... I even still have the cover so I could create a shaded area.

Any opinions on whether the change of scenery may cause any stress?

I also realize I technically posted this to the wrong forum.

I don't think that taking your turtle outdoors can do anything but good for him. I take my tortoises outside to graze and just let them wander around freely while i watch. They graze on clover and dandelion and attempt to catch bugs...they love it! I keep mine in bins like yours and in a few months were planning on moving them to kiddy pools as well. Just make sure they cant climb out. Also check out this site it has care sheets and lots of other great articles.

Good luck!
