What do baby Mole Kingsnakes eat in the wild???

BlueKing Oct 14, 2005 06:39 PM

Just wondering, since I have a hatchling moleking. Anyone know what they prefer to eat when they are so tiny? Never had a(hatchling) moleking before. Are they hard to get feeding? All the mole kings I've had before were bigger ones and they all ate without problem. Just wondering. . .havn't tried to feed this one yet. . .
Thanks,

Zee

That's what I would usually feed (small) scarlet kings . . .
Have they been known to eat other things in the wild? Ie: tiny frogs, insects, worms?

I would think mostly lizard prey, but also include smaller snakes and frogs as well.
I have mole kings that take pinks right away and some that do not. One of my sfmk eats geckos like candy and the other is iffy at best on them.
Any that don't really seem gung-ho about feeding are given mouse tails until they decide to feed on their own.
Again though just as stated elsewhere, skinks are probably #1 as a small king food.
What locality is your baby??
Pics please!

I have 3 hatchling Mole Kings from Montgomery Co., North Carolina. They all have been quite difficult thus far. They even turn their noses up at live Ground Skinks. So for now, they are taking mouse tails with a little assistance on my part. Like Mark said, this will work until they decide to take food on their own.

Hey Mark! I was hoping to send this little girl to you. She is from Cumberland county, NC. (near the edge of the sandhills). She appears to have an (internal) injury at the posterior part of her body (check dark spot on body near bottom right of pic). I will have to monitor her for a few more days to see if she'll be alright . . .

awww. Maybe a bite by something?? Or trampled/run over? A friend in SC actually ran over a small mole king on his bike once and thought he had killed it. Years later he's still going. There's hope!

Yeah, looks that way (trampled/run over). So far she's survived for a whole week!

Here she is dispatching a Crowned snake that I found yesterday for her. . . She ate that and a small ground skink. Hope she can digest it ok. I guess now I'll know if she'll pull through with that injury she has.

Yeah, I figured that they would slaughter any and all snakes smaller than themselves. That would be my guess as to what they eat in the wild. Probably reptile eggs are a favorite, too. Awesome, Zee!

Thanks Todd! How's it going over there?
Got me another female 3.5' Eastern (king) from my home county. I'll post pics of her in a few days... Talk to you soon!
