Can a pair be maintained in a 4x8 enclosure (during cooler months - outside and a bit larger in the warmer months) without too much stress to the female or is another female necessary? Thanks for the advice!

32 sq ft is plenty of space, and if you include things like rocks and logs (or anything that can serve as a visual barrier), then the female will have a chance to escape the male.
But, it also depends on the male. I've had one male that would never bother the females, and I've got another who is always, year-round, any time of day, in the mood. To let the females have a break I'll put him in a separate pen. His mating style includes biting and ramming.
If the male proves to be too aggressive, or if the female just needs a break, you may want to consider sub-dividing the pen. I've put slots in my main pen that allow me to prop a board in the middle.
Thanks for the advice!
The male to female ratio should be at least 1:2. Watch them and make sure the female is not stressed. Some males are not interested in mating, so she would be fine then. If she is stressed, you will probably have to separate them.
