phobos Oct 24, 2005 05:06 AM

Yesterdays eye opener came from a study at the Texas A&M Natural Toxins Research Center.

They demonstrated that Wyeth Coral Antivenom had NO neutralizing effect of the venom of Eastern Coral Snake!!!! YIKES!!!! They tested the Bioclone & Costa Rican also and they were effective against M. fulvus and M. tener

I am not surprised. As many problems as Wyeth's product had, the stuff worked. Can't say the same for the new stuff.

A friend of mine was bitten by a M. nigrocinctus back in January, and the C.R. serum was quite effective in neutralizing the bite. Oddly he didn't experience any neurotoxic symptoms, but did experience a LOT of pain in the bitten finger.

Matt:

The Costa Rician A/V's are highly regarded as being very effective. They use the whole IgG rather that a Fab fragment product which does increase the problem of reaction. All of the Venom Doc's agreed, serum reactions although serious, were easy and straight forward to treat, whereas the venom effect were not.

If they could only get their production issues back on track.
