ok, I have been told by a lot of people that if you want to breed your fat tail, you pretty much HAVE to feed them pinkie mice. I was just wondering what size your fat tail should be when you start doing this. I have one girl who should be ready to breed within a few months.. pending weight issues, but I am hesitant to feed her pinkie mice because they are almost bigger than her head. Is this OK? Or should I wait a few more months. I am sure she is as least 5-6 months old. Maybe older.

Firstly, I would not try to breed a 6 month old gecko. I feel that is too young. Websites I have read say that they are generally sexually mature at 12 months (others say 8) none say 6. Also, I have never had any luck getting any of mine to eat pinkie mice. Honestly, I only tried once as I feel that a healthy weight can be maintained without them, and not a single one of my geckos (except Jessie, who is a leopard) ate a pinkie. Give your girl a few more months to grow and see how she is weight wise before trying to breed her.

I just wanted to say, that I am completely aware that she is too young to breed, and I thought that I made that clear in my original post. That is why I was asking about getting her weight up, using pinky mice. I have heard of a lot of people using them. I have also heard from a lot of breeders, that success would be limited without using them.

You did make that very clear. My apologies. Apparently I can't read.

I have bred fatties for a number of years and have never fed pinkies. As long as you are feeding crickets daily when they are young, they will grow
I would not even think about breeding until the females weight is at least 55 grams (IMO). It is better for the females if you wait, that way their body has time to develop. The healthier the female, the healthier the offspring

Hope that helps.

All my females did great laying this year without them.
