Adult waigeo size? (plus pics of my new ones)

Kevin Saunders Nov 01, 2005 08:59 PM

I just got my new waigeos in and they look great. They're all much smaller than the female I had though. I got 4.2 and one of the females had already given birth to dead babies after being imported so I guess she was of breeding age. She wasn't drastically bigger than the males and the other female, but her head was much larger, probably 3x the size of the other boas' heads. My female, Daisy, has a head much larger than any of these and is a lot thicker (but she has been eating fuzzies). The other new female I got is about the same size and proportion as the males which are all about the same. In the pic with 3, the female is on top so you can see she's about the same size as the males. I used my hand for size reference, can you guys give me some idea whether or not these are full grown? I assumed the males were adults and the female was a subadult, but I'd like more opinions.

Those look to be average sized adult waiegos. Now with Indo tree boas from Irian Jaya, that also looks to be about the average sized adult. That being said, I have seen dozens if not hundreds of the Irian Jaya versions and I do recall seeing one or two very large females about 1/2 times longer and thicker, but these were not common of course and were an exception. But feeding these guys rodents may permit us to grow some larger specimens much less if they remain stress and parasite free, then it would a good guess they may grow larger in captivity?

That's interesting. I got my big female from Ben Siegel as a waigeo but she is a good bit bigger than the others I've seen. I don't have a pic of her in my hand, but I have this picture of a male from the previous picture in with her so you can get an idea of her size. Does she look like a big waigeo to you or an Irian Jaya carinata? You can see her head is 3 or 4 times the size of his and she's at least twice his diameter. She has been eating rodents since I got her, which may have contributed to her girth. Her pattern is very similar to his and his coloration looks like hers did before she shed so I'm hoping they'll be compatible.

She is a waiego for sure with those circle blotches. Males are always much smaller but can easily mate the females.
