Check it out ^ Loss for loss for my year.
Well these are ok:
News paper
"CareFresh"
Pine
Aspen
***on wood/loose substrates just be sure your snake doesn't ingest the substrate.***
what i DON'T recommend is CEDAR or WOOD CHIPS,
*Cedar is poisonous to snakes
*Wood chips hold more bacteria than you can imagine (after they have be soiled a few times)

hope that helps

i use pine for all my snakes but one i use sand.

what type of sand we talking about here?
reguler `ol beach sand or like "calci-bone" or something... sand is dangerous if u do in-cage feeding, i learned that the hard way.

im useing repti sand(the digestible stuff so they say) but 2marrow i need to change it and im gana put pine in it. i've had sand in there for about a year. its for this lil girl.
I'm very new to owning snakes, but at the advice of an experienced snake keeper at the pet store where I shop, I use a combination of Repti-bark and cypress mulch. I also put some moss on top of the substrate to help maintain humidity in the cage. I'm getting a pretty steady 50% humidity, and my snake had a successful shed today.

It's not how many snakes you have. It's how happy and healthy you can keep them.
I'm not trying to discourage you but you gotta be careful who you refer to as an "experienced snake keeper" esp. a pet store employee... i been around too many times to hear them give very bad advice.
i've used repti-bark (wood chips) b4 and it's really not as healthy as a drier substrate and all the moisture you're referring to is not very necessary... just think heat (warmth), moisture, soiled substrate all ideal for bacteria to grow and multiply.
i keep a lot of my snakes in wooden enclosures use news paper or pine substrate and haven't had a shed problem... good luck

Newspaper all the way here, cheap, economical, and a breeze to clean up and replace!! Plus you can feed on it and not worry about accidental substrate ingestion. Wouldnt use anything else!!
