Help! Tokay sick?

menita Dec 05, 2005 05:53 PM

Can anyone out there help me? My Tokay is sick! He's lost 14g over the last month, spends all of his time on the ground and his stools are a thick mucousy blob. He is barely eating anything but still moves around quite a bit (especially when I mist. A fecal test has been done but came up negative. Any ideas?

Well I'm certainly NOT a vet, but if this was my lizard I would worm him, sure sound like parasites to me, but thats my opinion.

I would not wait too long before doing something, as this guy will go down hill fast at this rate. Try another vet and get a second opinion/ another fecal done.

Let us know how he does!

Thanks I'll try another fecal/vet.

Fecal analysis is not the only diagnostic available for herps! Parasites are not the only illness either!

1)Whatever vet you end up using, let them know how far you're prepared to go to save your gecko. Bloodwork would be my next choice of tests, and will involve sedation so as to not have the tail drop while sampling. Often symptomatic treatment is done while a diagnoses is yet to be found and will likely be necessary to keep your critter alive.

2)Verify your husbandry and troubleshoot where it can be improved. It can always be improved, even if there are no obvious flaws.

If this was a cat or a dog, it would be hospitalized.

Thanks for the input, we've already taken blood and I've already made some impovements to his environment. Right now we are trying to keep him in a stress free sterilized environment until we can find out what's ailing him.
