Redfoot size...do I have some gargantuan species?

steffles Dec 08, 2005 12:45 PM

First off...they do not get fed freely and only get fed the foods they should eat! Second, neither tort is pyramided, so I know there's nothing wrong there. Plus...I do know that captive bred/kept in habitats do grow faster/gain more weight rapidly...

That said, my four-year-old redfoot is 8 1/4" SCL and weighs over 5 pounds. My 8-month-old hatchling is 4" SCL and weighs 200 grams. Are they out of whack or what? Now, they DID come from the same breeder, so maybe that's where the connection comes in, but jeez...I'm going to end up with Galapagos sized torts by the time they are fully grown!

I would say that yours are doing well but that doesn't mean they will be giants.
Here are three of mine. The largest is just under five inches and was hatched 9/14/04. The second largest was hatched on 5/28/05 and is right at four inches. The smallest was hatched on 8/28/04.
All are from the same pair and the female is twelve+ inches and the male nine.

You've got some beauties!! I was sort of being facetious about them being giants...I guess I was more wondering if they were growing too fast. Padme, the one hatched on 04/04/05, weighs almost three times the size that Shellie, the one hatched on 08/20/01, was at her age. I guess Padme is the one that scares me with her growth rate!

Wow, Carl...the colors on their heads are amazing! Talk about sibling rivalry, big brother is so much bigger!
