lizard from southern Bahia Brazil

billysbrown Dec 18, 2005 10:09 PM

These were all over an ecoresort I stayed at in Corumbau, Brazil in southern Bahia. I also spotted one in nearby Praia de Espelho, and I think in Tijuca park in Rio de Janeiro (I think). They stayed on the ground most of the time, ascended small trees and bushes to flee and once that I saw to display (head bobs).

These were big ones (8-10 inches?). Smaller ones were more strongly patterned. All had that dark spot/dash above the shoulder.

Looks like a species of tropidurid lizard (Iguania)

My guess would be Tropidurus torquatus - but i'm not a 100% sure.

It's either Tropidurus torquata or Tropidurus itambere, and judging from the pictures, male.

Actually, going back over your message (duh!), I'd revise my statement to say the larger are probably Tropidurus torquatus, and the smaller, more patterned ones are Tropidurus itambere. The main way to tell is to look for their "mite pockets", T.itambere lack them while T.torquatus has rather prominent ones. There used to be a good site detailing this, but I can't seem to find it at the moment.
