Eyes bulged out

thebirdlivess Dec 23, 2005 01:04 AM

I recently purchased two frilled dragons at the Atlanta Reptile Show. Aside from being a little on the skinny side (working on changing that) they appear to be in great health. Then the other day I was watching them and, over the course of around 30 seconds, one of them shut his eyes and they started to bulge out. I could see its eyeball and it was turning blood red, as well as the skin around the eye. All of a sudden it stopped, and they returned to normal. I have no idea what may have caused this, and I have not witnessed it again. I now keep my camera nearby just in case there's a repeat. Any ideas?

I would take both of them to the vet ASAP. That is obviously not normal, nor can it be caused by something minor that you can treat at home. A vet will be able to help you out, and the longer you wait the more you risk losing your new frilleds to something that may be treatable in an early stage and maybe not so treatable in an advanced stage.

Although I have never seen this most of the frilled I first got where under fed. People do not realize how much they eat and wimpy crickets don't put much fat on. I fed mine a steady diet of roaches and they all where very fat, happy, and bred like crazy. Feed them in the morning and at night and they should gain weight and look much better.

I saw my Frilled do this about 2 weeks ago. Freaked me out to say the least. I came home, looked in the cage and both eyes were closed but bulged way out. As soon as I opened his cage he had them drawn back in and opened his eyes and looked at me like, "what's the problem". I'm not saying it's normal because I don't know that for sure. I've never seen him do it before and he is healthy as can be. I'm personally not going to worry about it unless I see him do it again or it causes a problem. I think maybe this is one of those things they do when we aren't looking. This is my personal opinion of course.

I know this is a yr old forum, but for ppl that have seen this frillz do this, its natural. I heard its a way they clean their eyes! good thing i read that before i saw my frilled dragon do it or i would have geeked out.
