Anole eyes

BugNerd Jan 25, 2006 02:21 PM

I have two anoles; one female and one male. I have noticed that when the make is sleeping, his eyes bulge WAY out. They almost lokk like they are going to pop out! When he wakes, they go back in. Is there something healthwise going on here or do they all do that?

They were both in pretty bad shape when I rescued them, so I thought something may be going on.

Oh, FYI, I made a hole in the lid of a plastic water bottle (20oz size)and put some aquarium air tubing in it. The hole is small enough to fit tightly around the tubing and prevent leaking. The bottle is turned upside down with the tubing going into the tank and they drink the drops at the end. It works just like bottles that can be purchased for small mammals, but cost about $0.50 You have to squeeze the bottle a little to make a few drops come to get them interested, but then they learn that it is a source of water.

Sorry about the typos I really should check for those.

Thanks for the TON of replies :P I didn't think the eye bulging was due to shedding since he had shed two days earlier, but I think his head hadn't shed completely. Looks like he has almost removed all the skin now and is doing ok. Might have been too dry in there.

Haven't been around lately. I never saw this happen with mine while she was sleeping but I have noticed the same eye thing once in a while during the day. Really scared me too. I just can't remember if it was just before a shed or not.

Mine never had trouble shedding but this last time, there was a piece on her head that wouldn't come off. Never happened before. I increased the misting a little one morning and it was gone the very same day, so dryness might have been the deal for you too.

Glad things are better.

He shed relatively easily except for the bottoms of his feet. They are in a new enclosure now...20gal long with a layer a gravel for drainage covered by a layer of peat. I put some plants in and it stays more humid now. Trying to keep it about 60%. I'm hoping next he sheds, it'll come off more easily. There are some sticks with rough bark in there that he has been rubbing on.

This is the female..I couldn't get a good one of them male yet. Not sure about how to add pics, but let's see if this works. it does with another forum:

Hey, that's a great shot! I've only been able to get one shot from across the room and through the glass. This Brown Anole is as wild as the day I rescued her over 2 years ago. I can't get near the tank without her hiding.

That's a cool picture! I like the pattern on their backs.

I don't get it..?

this part?

Sorry about that. I just tried to type thank you and -no text- in the subject line so you didn't have to open it but the site software wouldn't let me post without typing something else in the message box, so that's what I typed.
