Normally, chewing bones will keep a cat's teeth free of tartar. Some cats though have chronic periodentitis. Some has been shown to be related to Bartonella infection, also known as Cat Schratch Disease. You could ask your veterinarian to test for this. If it is positive, azithromycin is the antibiotic of choice.
