Hey guys i plan on getting a new brb very soon and i wanna set up the enclosure before i do so however would like some help. Im looking for dummy proof here as im not good with the internet. Can anyone supply links of an enclosure, heating source and thermostat. Also what do you use for the fooring. Newspaper,papertowels, etc etc. im not new to snake keeping but never had a snake that required so much humidity. Any help would be great thanks !!

Color change in albino Colombian

Just a stupid question, I have never seen an adult albino Columbian Rainbow Boa, just curious how the albino affects the ontogenetic color change in normal boas. Does it just retain the juvenile pattern normally “lost” by the darkening? Or does it become whiter?? And how does it affect the night time color change?

Hello!

I have a 3 and a half year old BRB that I got from a nice young couple off Craig's List 5 months ago. They purchased her from a breeder when she was a month old. She didn't come with much info, but seemed very healthy and nice so she came to live with me. This is my first snake, first reptile actually.

They told me she was eating one F/T weanling rat every 2-3 weeks. So I bought weanlings and she ate one that night rather quickly so I offered her another which she ate eagerly. 10 days later I offered her 2 more and she ate them quickly, no noticeable lumps after eating so I moved up to small rats after that second feeding. She is currently getting one small rat, 50-65g, every 10 to 14 days. She was 483g when I brought her home (5 months ago) and is 689g today. So obviously she is gaining weight and not starving.

I look at the pictures on this forum of the beautiful BRBs and it seems like all the experts have snakes that are thicker and bulkier then mine.

I can't seem to find any reference on how much she should weigh, how much she should eat, how often she should eat...

I know the go to rule is that her meal should be no bigger around the widest part of her body. But this seems very arbitrary to me and doesn't cover how often I should feed. Is there a formula for feeding based on weight? I've read that you can offer food and if they don't eat then it isn't time yet. That seems like a waste of defrosted rodent and what if she just keeps eating and gets fat? I've read that some snakes do that.

I want her to be healthy and fed correctly but not over fed. Any thoughts would be very welcome!

And where are the instructions for posting pictures on these messages? I wanted to include some photos of her back and sides to see if anyone thought she looked too skinny but I'm at a loss for how to actually do that!

Sounds to me like you are doing everything correctly. There really is no exact formula for feeding snakes. Much of it is personal opinion/experience/experimentation. I think what you are doing now is fine, similar to what a lot of owners do. Keep in mind that in the wild boids probably eat much less than what most captives are fed, so you're not going to starve your snake.

Hi Folks,
I registered here in 06, so it's been at least a few years since I have had any snakes. My wife and I are thinking about getting another BRB in the next few months. First we are going to be doing the research on requirements again, getting an enclosure set up and then hopefully the snake soon after that.

There was a lady In the area of Pensacola Fl that raised BRB. If I remember correctly, her first name is Julie. I'm not sure of her last name, although I think it starts with a G. Does anyone know of her by chance?

Are there any BRB breeders, commercial or private, on the gulf coast area? From Tallahassee Fla west to New Orleans La Or anyplace in between? Mobile Al, Biloxi or gulfport Ms? I dont mind ordering a snake online, but I'd rather pick it up in person and drive it home instead of putting it through the stress of an airplane ride and possibly being thrown around.

The BRB that we had a few years ago was bought at a reptile shop in Panama City Fl. The owner got it from a local breeder. I have looked for the shop but cant find it now.

Colombians? Really? Glance at the range map, however, and you discover that they are found in at least ten nations:

Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Guiana, Suriname, French Guiana, Brazil.

Does anyone else besides me see the folly of naming ANY species after political boundaries into which they do not fit?

As usual, information available on the Internet about this species is VERY sparse. Much information that I found was incorrect, and some information, especially Care Sheets, has simply been copied almost verbatim from site to site.

(As with so many other topics, when no one takes the time to research & verify, instead simply trusting blindly and copying from a prior source.)

I realize that there are three powerful truths about "Colombians":

1. They are not from wet tropical forests. They are from dry tropical forests and drier coastal regions.
2. They don't require as much humidity as the other, southern species.
3. They are not known to intergrade with any other subspecies (unlike Brazilians).

When I was researching mine, worried about providing the proper humidity, I quickly learned that the prior owner had taken no special precautions whatsoever. He kept the snake in a rack, with dry bedding, only occasionally misting the enclosure. The snake was with him for at least two years, and grew into a healthy, bulky adult.

I"m most curious about where original breeding stock came from, since the source may or may NOT have been Columbia. Knowing modern reptile dealers and the high incidents of poached animals, the origin for most specimens in the United States may just as easily have been Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Venezuela, Guiana, Suriname or a province in Brazil.

When I crossed over to Brazilian Rainbow Boa websites, they often repeated the same very interesting claim: "They were imported in high numbers during the 1980s and 1990s from Suriname". (There were NOT imported from Brazil - so why are they not called Suriname Rainbow Boas in the trade?)

If any dealers or hard-core herpers out there have any insight into the likely origins of Browns, please reply.

Only range map I can find for Epicrates maurus:

When I look at the range map, I can tell that it is incomplete. It shows huge gaps in the Savanna regions of Venezuela wherer the species is likely common. Same for regions of Guyana & Suriname.

Based on the common name (Colombian), their actual range map, and knowing that many "Brazilian" rainbow boas were imported from Suriname, my guess is that Venezuela or Suriname may have been the origins for most captive-bred animals.

That all original captive stock came from ONLY Colombia seems quite unlikely - especially when one considers how common animal & reptile poaching is in most poor nations.

True, and you made a good point.

Point taken. I keep my 55-gallon vivarium with a screen cover, and I mist daily. I also have a salad bowl as a soak dish, concealed in the corner in a very nice naturalistic setup.

I've also selected porous lava rocks which will keep pockets of water on them for hours. One plastic plant is especially dense and retains moisture well, too. My setup should be fine.

While he's mostly calm & placid, handling is the biggest issue. Prior owners were boys, and then the man with a snake rack. I don't think that he was handled much, or properly, and he was likely never taken outside. As a young adult, he's just now learning what it's like to explore, climb, feel sunshine & wind and engage with a Human.

He gets daily handling now, with outside exercise on warm, sunny days. I have a large back yard with shrubs and open areas for ideal supervising while he enjoys nature.

It would be interesting to know what region or port city they were known to ship out of, thanks for your efforts.

New Rainbow Setup

Just got a 2013 BRB and have him set up with a 40 gallon, heating pad, hide, large water bowl (large enough for him to soak completely), 2.5' grape branch, and some plastic flowers and vines for decoration. His substrate is 50/50 bark/repti-bark (I think?) to keep humidity up. It got coooooold last night and he has buried himself in his substrate. Is a heat lamp necessary? Would that compromise humidity? Should I be misting?

Hey there! Thanks again for all the help! It's been a couple weeks and now he's starting to act a little funny... Late at night the other day he started making screaming noises- like really loud wheezing. His purple heat lamp was on at the time and when we turned it off, he stopped almost immediately. Today he started making loud-ish whistling noises, without the lamp being on. Any thoughts? No foaming at the mouth at all so I'd like to hope it isn't an RI.

Awesome! Thank you so much for the detailed response. I have since gotten him a 100 watt black-light (sorta) bulb in a ceramic 8" lamp. I can keep the temperature anywhere between 75 and 90 and I'm taking that temperature 4 inches from the bottom of the tank (12 inches from the bulb itself). I'm misting twice a day to compensate for the drying from the lamp.

NOW he's submerging himself completely in his water bowl, all day and all night. Every once in a while he'll make a cute but obnoxious little fart noise because he goes under again. Haha! Is this normal? Is the humidity too low?

Thanks again for your help and support! I'm excited to get this all ironed out in time for his first feeding at home on Thursday!

I've been out of the loop for a few years now as i had to pass my collection on due to personal circumstances. I'm just getting back into keeping rainbows (Argentines for starters) and things seem to have changed a great deal regarding the splitting/lumping of the epicrates.

Has anyone read the Chimaira book 'Rainbow boas - natural history and captive husbandry'? If so, any comments on changing ideas regarding the (re)classification of the subs?

I felt some confusion after reading the Matz paper on which the book seems to be based and how particularly the E.c.barbouri was lumped in with E.c.maurus as my understanding was that e.c.barbouri was a red subspecies along the lines of e.c.gaigei.

I realise that subs are much more defined in the USA and that European stock may be heavily hybridised but paraguayan as we know them over here appear to also have been described very differently!

Any opinions would be gratefully received.

Welcome back, and nice choice getting back in with Argentines.

You’re not alone in being confused - the Epicrates situation has been a bit of a moving target over the years. The Chimaira book is decent overall, but like you noticed, a lot of it leans heavily on the Matz paper, which itself stirred up quite a bit of debate.

The lumping of barbouri with maurus is one of those points that doesn’t sit well with everyone. A lot of keepers (especially in the US) still treat barbouri more in line with the “red” forms like gaigei based on phenotype and locality history, even if the genetic data suggests otherwise. It’s one of those classic cases of genetics vs. what people have been observing in captivity for years.

And you’re absolutely right about European stock there’s been so much mixing over time that applying strict subspecies labels can get pretty murky. “Paraguayan” in particular seems to have been used pretty loosely depending on the line.

At this point, I tend to take the newer classifications as a useful framework, but not the final word, especially from a keeper’s perspective. There’s still a gap between field data and what we actually see in captive populations.

Would be interesting to hear what lines your Argentines come from.

Hi, Sorry about the MASSIVE delay in replying, Yes I do have Argentines, one female of my 2.4 group is hopefullly gravid (the rest of the 0.4 are a way off breeding size!).

The only problem is that I'm in the UK. More than happy to work out international trade for some E.assisi or E.alvarezi if it isn't prohibitively expensive!

Brazilian Rainbow Boa health issues

I bought a BRB from a breeder in March when she was 7 months old & have had regurgitation issues ever since. First I thought it was a heat spike. Her tank got up to 86f for a day so I fixed that issue & it still kept happening. I had her in a vivarium & completely gutted it and put her on a simple LAM setup with a hide & some approved soil for humidity. I did research on the plants I had before putting them in there & they weren’t toxic but who knows what the stores put on them to preserve them. After waiting another two week period to let her stomach bacteria build back up she ate a pinky with benebac (a probiotic) on 6/5 and kept it down. She was showing signs of hunger so I fed her two days ago 6/17 and has been fine until today…

She started writhing around uncontrollably like she was in severe pain. It was like a seizure episode but instead of shaking she was writhing around. It finished with her head completely upside down & her mouth open. I rushed her to the vet & he had no idea what was wrong. He gave her a generic dewormer & will be calling his buddies at UC Davis for more information. When I got her in the carrier she was strike-y and nervous (I could tell she was hurting) but when she got to the vet she was perfectly normal again which confused us further.

She has a great personality, never nippy or nervous, always curious and active but right after she eats she shows signs of discomfort. She sprawls out in the middle of the terrarium and lays there with her head cocked to the side or turned completely 180 degrees at her neck. I'm used to snakes retreating to their warm hide, curling up & digesting for a few days but it’s like shes in pain/discomfort after she eats everytime.

Specs: 10 months old, 20in long, humidity 80-97, temp 70-80f, started her on fuzzy & hopper mice but due to her regurgitation syndrome Ive had her on pinkies to keep the stress of eating to a minimum

Well, I'm sorry to hear your snake passed. The benebac would have helped build gut load. Flagyl is used in the opposite type scenario where there may be a bacterial infection that inflames the digestive tract. Where you had the animal for quite a while under your care, I can see where the breeder may think what happened was out of his/her control or responsibility.
If your animal had feeding issues from the start, it would be questionable, whether or not the animal was sick when sent, or there may have been a husbandry related issue. Husbandry can include things such as a contaminated food item you had no way of knowing there was a problem with (that started everything going downhill), so I can see where the breeder may not feel it's their responsibility to do anything.
One way or another, I'm truly sorry you lost your animal and wish you all the best.

I didn't treat her with flagyl, I used benebac. That's what the breeder said to use when I contacted him regarding the regurges. Sadly she passed away yesterday. I contacted him again this morning & we'll see what he says. I don't think he'll replace her. He seems like he doesn't really care which is a shame because I've heard great things about him. Thanks for the help but there's not much more for me to do at this point.

Did you notify the breeder? If there's something internally not right, if it was me as the seller, I'd replace the animal, no questions asked. Unless it's an expensive morph, the money you're spending on vet bills is hard to justify unless the vet has a cure what's going on. Has it been treated with flagyl?

"Chita "Babe" updates

Pic 1: "Babe" just shed and i wanted to see her colors. i have no clue what colors she will eventually be but im hoping she will end up on the orange to orange/red side. i measured her shedding and its about 34 1/2" long.

Pic 2: "Chita" has only shed once for me but he is getting bigger and gaining nice size. after much asking around and researching ive come to the conclusion that he is showing great promise for the "Ted Thompson" stripe or the "Candy" stripe. he is for sure and aberrant pattern. still dont know what color he will end up either. hoping that he stays either yellow or orange.

Both look great! The top pic looks more on the red side so it's possible it may get a little darker with age (which I like). The orange one could just appear to be a larger version of what we see now, or...who knows LOL??? As Cliff mentioned, knowing what the parents looked like helps, otherwise it's just a question of wait and see.
Whenever I have a litter of rainbow boas, I always let them shed at least twice before putting them up for grabs. I've seen some tremendous variations within the same litter, that weren't so obvious at birth. I find time makes a big difference with these guys, at least with the ones I'm working with.
Would you believe these two are litter mates? The lighter one, (anery) pictured on the left, is the SAME animal pictured as an adult in the thread below this one. Talk about change with age!

This is my first anery male produced in 2009. This line of anery is ontogenetic in that they start out looking exactly like a Sharp strain anery, but as they age, they turn golden yellow and their jet black markings grow more intense, much like the white stripe that widens on an Amazon basin tree boa. It's truly an outrageous contrast that has to be seen in person to appreciate!

It depends on how many a buyer purchases. The homozygous visuals go anywhere from $400-$500 with hets at half that price. It's to the point now I don't even post them for sale. I will post pics of the next litter here for anyone that's interested. I'm working on creating dh ghosts now, from the male pictured as the sire, but I'm unsure if the hypo has taken or not. There are going to be a LOT of interesting brb morphs coming around in the next decade, that's for sure!

im still trying to get a clear answer as to what sort of Patterns and markings my male has. he is super irregular and very light in color. he has long dorsal chains and his side markings are super broken up. he looks like he has Cheetah Spots and markings lol.

"Babe" is very pretty as well. she has light orange dorsal colors and lots of connected or "chains" on her. plus some of her side markings are very black and filled in.

any comments and thoughts as to what these two might produce when they breed??

i fully understand the responsibility of having babies and a litter. ive done lots of research thus far. i would be willing to reduce prices on normal babies.

i was thinking the same thing, to mate him with a aberrant female. still need one of those then lol.

no unfortunately i didnt get to see the parents. i bought them from two different locations from the same company. i believe the female is around 6 months and the male is probably just shy of that so around 5 - 6 months.

on the male, more than dorsal chaining, his side crescents almost merge and join into the dorsal marks. he almost has no lines on his head as well. very little head stripping.

they both have went through one shed with me. they shed it clean off in one piece without my help at all. i just found each shed in the enclosure.

what color do you think the male will be when he is adult?

juvenile BRB bites!

i have a one year old BRB and he is not keen on being held or handled. he does not like to be bothered and he strikes at me often. when i do manage to handle him he tries everything to wiggle out of my hand. he moves fast and starts to breath fast. i have to wear gloves just to handle him. what else can i do to hand train him?? is there anything more i can do?? im open to any advice. i know they are a nippy species as babies but he is just a dick lol

**UPDATE**

my male juvenile snake Chita, doesnt nip or try to bite anymore. its been a while since the last time he has bitten although he did show singes of stress and reluctance to being handled. with patience, love and constant work i think ive either bonded enough with him or he is just getting with the program thanks for all the tips!

um very lucky to live in san diego California so the weather here is very stable and temps have not been any issue thus far. i have the humidity under control quite well too. i should have been more specific. what would be a cost effective way to house them as adults? as far as making my own versus buying one. thanks for all the tips.

the advice you gave me on handling the little guy is working. im wearing gloves and being very gentle while handling him. he hasnt struck at me in a few days now lol

he was a bit more mellow when i first got him but still like this. recently i have been using a glove and he has taken a few good bites into it. ill try your tips and hope for the best. i really want to breed him.

also, what is a good yet cheep way to house them?

please help!

i cant get a clear answer on what pattern type my newly purchased male is. i know he is aberrant but i have a strong feeling that he will start turning out some killer babies when paired to the right mate. i just need to know what to call his pattern type and maybe even get some more info on what his markings could eventually produce. ive heard that he is close to a "Picasso" stripe. i feel like he has cheetah spots and stripes on him. almost like what ive seen from the "Ted Thompson" stripes or even some "Leopard" pics. im just all confused about it hahahaha. i do love his color though. i know he will turn out some really "High Color" babies too. any sound advice and help would be greatly welcome!

I Just brought my new rainbow boa home a little over a week ago. I did handle her the day I brought her home but after that day I gave her 6 days without being handled to get used to the new enclosure. On day 6 I attempted a feeding which was successful. I waited another day for her to digest before handling her again. I noticed right from the first day I brought her home that she ALWAYS stays on the cold side of the tank. Every time I pick her up she feels ice cold but if I move her to the warm side she goes right back to the cold side. My cold side is about 75°-77°, my hot side is about 80°, and right over the UTH the tank is 92°. The humidity in the tank is 80%-83%. The day I brought her home she was wonderful. The first day I handled her after feeding her she was wonderful. On the second day she was agitated and stuck at me. I thought it was because I startled her by digging her out of the substrate (5 inches deep) so after that any time I picked her up I'd dig her out then wait till she relaxed in the tank before picking her up. She didn't strike at me again but I could tell she was agitated. I THOUGHT this was due to acclimating to the new home and to me. Trying to ease that I handled her every night for between 5-15 minutes. 4 days after I fed her she regurgitated. I thought that only happened the day or maybe 2 days after they ate, not 4 days later. Why is she staying on the cold side of the tank? Why is she so agitated? What am I doing wrong? If I move her to the warm side she just goes right back to the cold. She hasn't explored she cage since the day after I got her, she just stays totally hidden all the time. What am I doing wrong? This is my first rainbow boa and I've read a lot about them trying to make sure I knew how to care for her. Prior to this I had only housed ball pythons and they are so different. I never had these issues with my ball pythons and don't know what to do or what's wrong. Please help.

I've gotten the temps and lighting fixed. Red basking bulb at night, white uvb bulb during the day. The bulbs are hooked up to a day/night timer and both the bulbs and UTH are hooked up to a thermometer that turns the heating elements on or off as the temperature drops and rises. The cool side is 75° while the hot side stays between 79°-82°. Today makes 2 weeks since she regurgitated and 12 days since I got the heating and lighting fixed and she still hasn't come out from hiding. I'm up all night every night due to a night job and still haven't seem her come out of the hide. everyday she's in exactly the same place though I can't tell if she's in exactly the same position. Today I added plants to the enclosure in hopes that the added hiding spaces would alleviate some of her anxiety. When I placed her back in the enclosure after adding the plants she didn't go immediately back to hiding but instead spent about 10 minutes looking around a very little bit. She appeared to be at least a little curious (the first time since the day I bought her home) . Since then she has gone back to hiding. My question is since I've changed the enclosure even though it was a positive change should I wait another week or two weeks before attempting to feed her again? (Since today would have been the feeding day 2 weeks from when she regurgitated) Is the anything else that I need to know or should change/fix? I can't figure out how to post pictures on here but would be more than happy to share some if you can tell me how to post them and would like to the the enclosure and/or snake (Krishna).

Thank you sooooooo much, that is the clearest response by far I have received. I'm sorry to bother you again but I have one further question and am desperate for information from someone who really knows what they are taking about. Since she regurgitate Saturday I have left her alone but now she never moves. It's been 4 days and she still isn't moving. I don't want to stress her out but the situation is stressing me out pretty bad now. Twice I checked just to make sure she was still alive and hadn't escaped. The first 2 days I had her she was phenomenal, her behavior was perfect. When can I expect her to start moving again and be the friendly snake I brought home. I'm trying to leave her alone and educate myself in the mean time but the total lack of response, or anything really, have me wondering if I didn't ruin a wonderful snake with my ignorant mistakes.

Thanks again for your help, I feel as stressed out over the situation as she is acting.
