Is there a better insulation for shipping repitiles than the standard styrofoam used by many shippers? I've used it, switched to 1" construction blue board, but both leave a mess when cutting with matte knife. Interested in R-Tech. 3/4" thickness and more rigid. Does this cut more cleanly without leaving a mess?

It might interest many of you to know that FedEx has it's own law enforcement officers. Since, 2004 the FedEx Memphis TN hub has a billet of 10 sworn, academy trained police officers who carry sidearms, do not wear uniforms and have full police powers including arrest powers. These LE officers are also cross-deputized as federal LE agents. The Memphis hub is an international hub that handles over 90 percent of coast to coast shipments (UPS WorldPort is based in nearby Louisville for the same reason: stable, predictable weather conditions).
Lets say a package containing a litter of six boa constrictors is being shipped from Joe's Boa Barn to Joe Smith at whatever address. This is an uncertified package containing none of the package labelling that a certified FedEx live animal package contains. ANY FedEx manager or LE agent, including federal customs officials may open this package if they reasonably suspect (reasonable suspicion) that an illegal act is about to take place. A non-certified FedEx live animal package without proper outside labelling is a violation of the Lacey Act. A relatively minor one but still, a violation.
If a LE officer sees "Joes Boa Barn" as the return address on an uncertified live animal shipment and knows what boa constrictors are, or if instead he notices air holes punched into the same package, that's reasonable suspicion to open that package.
Just an FYI to those wondering why it's necessary to obtain FedEx certification or, if you don't want to go that route, to use ShipYourReptiles when dealing with FedEx live animal shipments.

Just wanted to share my recent experiences with the Agricultural department here in California. The last two packages of snakes shipped to me were "rejected" by the Agricultural department. Both packages got to me on time, but days later I received "rejection" letters informing me that they were inspected due to not having the scientific name/identification on the outside of the box. On the first box they contacted the sender and were able to release the package for delivery once he told them what was in the box. The second box was opened and they found the scientific name on top of the lid so they released that package for delivery. Just letting everyone know to be careful shipping to CA as they're checking everything. Make sure to identify scientifically what you're sending here so the package doesn't get delayed or worse sent back to you.

Ive used some brokers in the past to export to europe, so i decided to look into the actual cost of exporting. I have no idea what shipping charges cost, but one logistics company quoted me $1200 to export a box to germany. Is that price realistic?

I just started shipping snakes again over the past several months through fed ex next day and the prices range anywhere from $65 at the lowest to $90. Typically the price is around $80-85 dollars just shipping one baby hognose in a standard small reptile shipping box with insulation and the weight is 1 pound. My question is are these prices normal now or am I paying too much? I even have an account with fed ex too. I have one customer keep telling me he's had snakes from all over shipped to him at no more than $50 overnight via fed ex. Are some sellers just eating the cost of shipping past $50 to satisfy customers? Also,I'm shipping from Colorado to states usually just above me or east coast.

You aren't being "bullied". Robyn is pointing out a very very real concern.
Using illegitimate shipping services to ship reptiles is a huge nightmare waiting just waiting to happen. Your quite flippant reply clearly shows one of two things. One, you just don't understand how using a non-approved shipper to ship reptiles ENDANGERS the whole industry. Or two, you do understand that fact, but saving a few bucks is more important to you than the ability of the reptile industry to ship and receive product. Robyn pointing out this to you isn't you being "bullied" it is you being informed what is the correct way to ship or receive reptiles.
Shipping mishaps happen, and if one of the packages shipped by this "third party 30% logistics company" needs to be opened and a reptile is found, can you guess what happens? The reptile and the packaging are destroyed! How are you feeling about your few bucks saved now? How about the black eye those types of events bring the reptile world. The media is often informed when an event like this happens. All of that to save a few bucks? For real, that is the path you would choose?
I'm not saying you have to use SYR. But to go on a forum and tell folks to use an illegitimate reptile shipper is wrong for the shipper, wrong for the reptile that could be destroyed as the result of your recommendation and wrong for the reptile industry as a whole.

I will not be bullied. Business is business. I've used fed ex for more than 15 years, and fed ex knows what i do. If a third party logistics can save 30% vs 16% i will use them. If you feel i'm doing the industry a disservice, i wouldn't worry about it. I'm not some big reptile breeder that has a million in inventory and ships a 100 packages a week and can absorb the overhead. I buy shipping supplies from superior shipping because often they are cheaper than other sources. I enjoy my hobby and do my part to keep it going.

Why would you promote an illegitimate third party reptile shipper that is not approved for that by either UPS or FedEx? In this age of legislation actively looking to shut down the hobby and industry of reptiles, this kind of bootleg service only threatens to endanger the hard working and APPROVED live reptile shipping services that DO operate within the proper channels.

Shipping prices are directly related to gas prices. When gas is high shipping is high. One this i do as a breeder is use a third party shipper that has a huge discount. Shipyourreptiles.com is on that offers a discount, but i have one i use personally that gets a way better discount. If you are shipping a couple boxes a month it might be worth your while to set up an account with them. Email me if you are interested, i can refer you.

Hi there. I'm in rather desperate need of a way to transport my reptiles from the US to the UK; I already needed one, but now I need one quicker due to wanted to make sure my burmese python gets out of the country safely.
If it matters, all are CB, and this is the list:

0.1 burmese (about the 3' mark still)
The companies I get in touch with seem to lose interest in my money when they realize I'm not interested in shipping fluffy bunnies or kittens.

Finding an actual shipper shouldn't be that hard.
FedEx ships animals all over the world.
If they don't meet your needs, check out the IPATA (International Pet and Animal Transportation Association).

Do be aware that your real hurdles are probably going to the paperwork involved.
All monitors and pythons are listed under CITES. You'll need to get your application process for that underway.
You'll also need to file a 3-177 with USFWS and have them inspected upon shipping. The USFWS web site can hook you up with the permits and declaration:

Live animal CITES inspections are $186 for non-commercial shipments.

I'm in need of some help bringing a few family members home. being in the military and having pets is like having extended family even if they are cold blooded and my Common boa (Davy) and my RedBlood (Milly) are like my kids. I've spent my three years in England did a tour in Afghanistan and now I'm heading home Back to the US. Shipping live animals is expensive, no way around it. Boxing fees alone are sky high. It's very likely that in even the cheapest scenario, you'll pay several times the worth of the animals in shipping/customs/permits/inspection fees.
But our pets are often times beyond price. If that's the case with you, you do have some options.
Price a few shippers on the IPATA.org website. They have an online directory.
Check the big shippers, FedEx ships animals, so does Delta Air cargo. I'm not sure about UPS or DHL, but it wouldn't hurt to ask.

Here's a long shot.
There is a regular reptile show in Hamm Germany. March is the next one I think. There are a number of US reptile guys that bring, and take back animals to and from the show.
There must also be someone from where you are that will be attending and can move reptiles to that show.
You still need to find an American who can bring back your boas and then they can ship them to your US address.
A really long way around, and it still will be expensive, but no where near the traditional export costs associated with just two snakes.

I have a few related questions about shipping during the summer. I searched this forum with several different queries and didn't find what I wanted, so here goes:
I'm looking to ship two snakes from San Diego, CA to Houston, TX. They are my pets and are currently with my parents after I moved to Houston (so I have control of when/how they are shipped as well.)
They are an adult Gopher Snake and a two-year-old (but not very big) Brazilian Rainbow Boa. I was out in San Diego last week and both appear healthy.
I planned to use ShipYourReptiles.com, ordered their shipping kits with insulated boxes, bags, etc. I planned to use FedEx overnight as SYR recommends and have the boxes held at the distribution center in Houston and pick them up there.
However, SYR's FAQ says that if the daytime high on either end is above 88F, to wait. It won't be less than 88F as a daytime high in Houston until late September or October. Of course, right now it is very, very hot. It should be in the low 90s in a couple of weeks.
I believe many reptile stores/breeders would ship me reptiles during the summer if I were to be purchasing them, which leads me to believe it may be able to ship them safely in a few weeks when temps are in the mid-low 90s.
-Am I wrong about that? Is it not possible to safely ship them until daytime highs are in the 80s?
-If it is possible, what is the set-up as far as cold packs go? SYR and the forum has nothing about how to use cold packs in the summer with snakes. Is it necessary? Would it be a bad idea, potentially freezing them to death in an insulated box? Is there a difference in commercially available cold packs? Affix it to the top or to the side of the box?
-Would adding some extra ventilation to the insulated box be a good idea in summer, or would that just allow more heat in?
-Any other relevant tips or advice from people experienced in summer shipping?

Hey Chris, it can definitely be challenging to ship during the hot days of summer. It is easier to ship during the winter than it is during the summer.
The weather guidelines that we use at SYR are for general use. But if you fine tune your planning, you can still get it done.
If you ship to a FedEx staffed facility, your package will arrive very early in the morning, and be kept in a room temperature environment, out of the hot weather, and out of a hot delivery truck.
That is just to a FedEx facility though, not necessarily a FedEx Office (Kinko's) or Mailbox Etc type spot.
You can find the appropriate facility address at the link below. Ship to that address, C/O your recipient, and mark it Hold for Pickup- i.e. "Billy Pickleson-Hold for Pickup"
Have the recipient pick it up as early as possible. Don't bother using a cold pack, they don't work the same, or over the same period, as a heat pack. Don't add extra ventilation, your typical 4 holes will be fine.
I WOULD STILL WAIT FOR THIS HEAT WAVE TO PASS. You don't want any kind of shipping disruption to affect your package, and when there are obvious weather issues, it is better to let them pass.

I have been shipping reptiles, venomous and non venomous for a number of years and have never had a dead, injured, or sick reptile arrive to anyone. It just gets so frustrating when you email or call about something you would like to have and the second you mention shipping, well, its like you just contracted the plague right before there eyes. I guess every person has there own reason why they wont ship, but come on, if your breeding reptiles to sell at some point you should probably figure out how to properly ship them. I found a snake i wanted to add to my collection, and i called the guy about it. We chatted about it for several minutes and i mentioned that it would need to be shipped and the he hesitated. I told him that i would send him the box, shipping label, snake bag, ect. All he would need to do is put the snake in the bag, then in the box, seal the box, and put on the label. He then explained to me that it was just to much work. SAD!

If you mean there’s no shipping option available, I’d check a few live-animal shipping services before giving up. For reptiles, aquatic animals, and invertebrates, ShipZeros is one option to look into. They offer discounted FedEx rates, overnight shipping, prepaid FedEx labels, tracking, and shipping support for breeders and other live-animal shippers. Depending on the destination, package, and timing, ShipZeros can also be a more affordable option compared with standard shipping rates from some other services. Weather and temperature conditions are worth checking before sending live animals, too.

When I went to the Google Maps site to locate the Service Center in my city where I could drop them off, I saw two reviews (from a year ago) that said that FedEx lagged on sending their packages. okay, question is moot because I did a *bit* of research (i.e., scrolled down this very forum) and realized that I needed the shipping license to ship animals with FedEx. DUR!!!
So now I'm using UPS, which is actually who I received my animals through before, now that I remember!! AND, they even guarantee morning arrival (at a cost) which FedEx Priority Overnight did not since the destination was rural. So I feel better about my decision to use UPS... since that is what my lizards were sent to me through.
Also, glad I'm into lizards and not snakes... sorry for all you snake people--that's lame that UPS won't ship them-- maybe you could say they are just legless lizards?

The title of my story is “Shipping Venomous Reptiles with Delta Air Cargo”. My name is Johnny and I am in the fourth grade lol! This is a long one folks so grab a soda and some popcorn.
Here is what little, but valuable, experience I’ve had with shipping venomous reptiles through Delta Air Cargo. I just shipped a crate of Crotalus atrox about a week and a half ago (as of February 20, 2011). I’m not a verified shipper either, by the way. The Delta Cargo office employee said that this particular office was the strictest in the USA. They have surprise inspections by corporate Delta employees, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, FAA, US Customs, as well as other organizations that have their own rules and regulations to go by. So they run a tight ship to say the least! The employee that I was dealing with mentioned that a lot of other Delta Cargo offices in other cities are much more lenient on certain things regarding shipping live venomous reptiles. Either that or they just don’t know, or care lol.
It was quite a learning experience for me. It was the first time I’ve shipped venomous. I had some trouble, but somehow managed to get that dang crate shipped. First of all, my box wasn’t banded with two steel shipping bands. Second of all, neither one of us noticed the tiny little ventilation holes that were drilled on the ASB board, which is an IATA requirement, until after the employee whipped out his handy dandy IATA book. I double checked the box and noticed that there were, in fact, ventilation holes. Then he just HAD to call IATA and “double check”. I finally got the crate shipped after having gone through all this nonsense, but I learned from it and now I know what it takes to ship venomous reptiles using the ever so friendly and convenient, Delta Air Cargo! I was blessed by God when a cargo employee from one of the other airlines comes walking over with a roll of steel banding, the clamps, and the crimper tool and got me all fixed up.
To read what MY particular crate was like, read on. It was a wooden crate made of ASB board. I think it was ½” thick wood which might be IATA’s minimum requirement. I’m not sure. I also don’t know whether or not it was water proof, which might be another requirement from what I’ve read on other forums. Inside of the crate was a Styrofoam box with a top on it (IATA requirement-I think). Inside that, were the double bagged and knotted Crotalus atrox. Now, the Delta Cargo office employee didn’t actually open my crate and inspect all of that, but there are IATA requirements for bagging snakes, etc. I got lucky there. The bags were supposed to be zip tied (above AND below the knot-I think) and marked with what was inside each bag (again, I’m not sure on that as I don’t have the IATA 2011 book). The outer lid of the shipping crate was screwed down. What I should have done (but didn’t know at the time) was had the shipping crate banded and crimped by a local trucking company. The following is debatable and other people have had different experiences but here’s what I have experienced from receiving other venomous shipments. I think you’re supposed to have the shipper and receivers name, address, and phone number written on the top of the box. Then you’re supposed to write what’s in the box and how many of each species. If I were you, I would write “Live Venomous Reptiles” on all four sides of the crate with the “double arrows” (I think that’s required). My crate didn’t have the shipper/receiver name, address, and phone number, but it DID have the species, quantity and the guy’s name.
I think that covers everything. This was a very recent experience and if you have any questions, feel free to ask. I’m by no means an expert, but I have gone through a very nerve racking day when I went to ship this crate. I really want to buy the most recent copy of the IATA Live Animal Regulations which is $175 on the link below. That way you can walk into that Delta cargo office with confidence and swagger lol.

Once you know the rules and do it a couple times, it’s really not that bad. My experience wasn’t all that bad, I just had a really nervous moment there when they told me I had to have steel bands lol. I had to run to the different trucking companies there on the airport grounds in the cargo area, and no one would help me out. God threw one of his little angels at me with the other airline’s cargo guy, so I got lucky.
Oh yea there is another part to this story. I get a call from Delta on the way home saying the pilot wouldn’t accept venomous snakes on his aircraft. I went into alarm panic mode. It was funny lol. They just booked another flight two hours later which ended up working better for the guy because he wanted them a little later in the day anyways. I later found out that this is common. I got a happy phone call when the guy received his animals that I sent to him so it was all worth it in the end. Be careful packing your live venomous reptiles by the way! It's not standard routine for most people and there can be a margin of error which may mean a trip to the hospital and an unhappy buyer/reciever on who ever's end your shipping to.

I have to ship some baby bearded dragons from new jersey to california. I have heat packs but we seem to be getting snow every other day here or the temps at night have not gone above the mid 20s. I am curious if this is safe to ship or do i need to wait for temps to go back up again. I have an anxious person in california as well as i would like to get rid of the babies before they become adults.

Check the weather FAQ at our site, linked below. You can ship successfully through the winter, but there are certainly cold snaps that become too much of a gamble for safe live arrival.
That nationwide storm period that just passed prohibited safe shipping across the entire nation, because of so many plane and transport delays. You have to wait for crazy times like that to pass.
But we shipped 600 successful packages this week through ShipYourReptiles.com, and weather next week looks great as well. Use the site weather guidelines, and feel free to call for more detailed weather discussion.
