Hi there, folks, I've owned my African Brown Headed Parrot for 21-1/2 years now. I've noticed, twice, that he seems like he's regurgitating, but what he's regurgitating is something that appears to be slimy spit (like mucous). As it comes out of his beak, it looks like (excuse the description) a snot bubble. I've also noticed that he doesn't seem to be pooping a lot, but he's also been a very picky eater lately.

I give him a mix of nuts, fruits, and veggies. He always has clean water and a clean cage. He has toys in his cage and a chile-flavored cuttlebone. I just don't know what to think here. He still sings and chirps and doesn't act like there's anything out of the ordinary. Does anyone have any ideas what this could be? Thanks for replies!

Has he been checked by a vet? I always ask this question first. Parrots do regurgitate during mating times or to show their "affections" to their humans at times. Usually it doesn't look like what you are describing though (at least none that I have seen). Parrots with asper. will sometimes have a mucus type of discharge that can collect and come out but again not sure if it is exactly like you are describing. Especially if is appetite is not strong or if there is any changes or lessening of feces then a vet is needed. Sorry I couldn't be more help

I got a Green Cheek Conure from a breeder and she said that the bird had the personality of a "she" so we called it Harlow and I absolutely loved the name but it never clicked then i got a DNA test and found out "she" is a he! I love him to death but I cannot decide on a name.. I've tried Harley but a friend of mine has a African Grey named Harley and I wanted to be more original but I can't completely decide.. if you have any suggestions please let me know, thank you

Well I know of two men with the name Harlow so that could be a male or female name if you actually still like it. Otherwise if you are wanting a name that sounds similar what about harpo, harper, hayden, Carlo? Any of those sound like something that might work?

I found this baby bird on my porch, seemed like it was just learning how to fly and landed and didnt want to leave. I want to get it healthy enough to have it fly away on its own. Behold a new bird is waiting to be weaned and to be added to our household. Gerry and I are waiting for a Fiery Shoulder Conure to be added to our pet loving household. I ordered the cage from a company in Canada and can't believe how solid and well put together the purchase is. I am very happy. I have also made a snuggle ring and tent for the little guy.

After a heavy storm yesterday morning I found a baby dove by itself on the ground. Unable to find the parents, I decided to take it home and see if I could care for it. A little bit of Googling helped me start feeding it some ensure in a bottle. I have seen videos where people feed them from bottles. We have been feeding it with an eyedropper as it only seems to eat that way. How often should I feed it and how much should it eat? It appears to be very young. The only part covered in what look like normal dove feathers are at the end of the wings. Everything else is covered with curly light tan hair and what looks like pins. It has gotten stronger since yesterday morning. At first, it could barely move. Now, it is trying to walk a little and move its wings as well as stretch its neck. I just want to be sure I am helping it and hurting it with what I am doing.

First and foremost - it was very kind of you to save the little baby! My advice is fairly simple: Check with your local DNR to ensure that it is legal for you to try to rehabilitate the dove. Do you intend on keeping it or trying to release it when grown? If you intend to keep it, you may need permits etc. If you intend to try and release it, I recommend contacting a local wildlife organization as soon as possible - the longer the baby stays with you, the more likely it will bond to humans and not be able to survive in the wild.

As for feeding if you are going to keep it and it is legal to do so, I recommend the Kaytee Handfeeding formula available at most pet supply stores or veterinary clinics that see birds. Yes, it is truly for parrots, but it is a great handfeeding formula for most any bird. The mix will need to be warmed but NOT HOT. Think of the bird like a human infant in that sense. You do NOT want to have the formula so hot that it burns the crop as that can be very fatal to all birds. This little one will need to be fed quite often at first - even every 2-3 hours. Feel the crop prior to feeding; if it feels full, wait longer and if it is empty, you are good to feed.

Once the bird is able to start eating on its own, I recommend avoiding seed mixes. Yes, in the wild they do take in a fair amount of seed, but it is very high in fat and low in certain vitamins and minerals. In the wild they eat a lot of other items as well that they won't get with a seed mix and they also burn a lot more fat than they do living in a protected house that is heated in the winter etc. Although some people will say that you should not use pelleted diets designed for other species of birds, our clinic actually recommends the canary/finch or parakeet sized pellets from any of the major companies for the primary diet - brands like Zupreem, Kaytee, Harrisons and Lafebers are just a few.

If you are going to do a seed mix diet, remember their beaks cannot crack the seeds well, if at all - no large sunflower seeds etc. They should also then have a daily vitamin/mineral supplement added to the food. No matter the diet, the bird should also have fresh veggies and fruits as well as some whole grain source like bread offered daily.

Finally, find a knowledgeable avian vet in your area. They'll be able to help you even more with the step by step process of raising the little one!

Hey take a look at my beautiful parakeet Petrie. He came into our home from the pet store, at 3 months of age and is now 5 months old. He's been very timid, and probably not hand fed, but he is coming around a bit. He loves to sing, when I play guitar and sing myself and he loves people. Lights up when we talk to him. I am hopeful that he will relax a little enough to be tame on my hand outside the cage. He just squawks now, when I try to return him to his cage after he has had a run around the room.

Good Morning! We were just given a beautiful white pigeon about 5 weeks old. he/she still has some pin feathers on head and breast. Presently we have him in a resurrected cage that isn't really big enough, but we don't intend to keep him in it once he is bonded to us. There is room enough to stretch his wings but not fly. We have raised wild pigeons before and one was so tame and bonded that we took him camping. He was free to do whatever and always came in at night voluntarily wherever we were, which was his M.O. at home as well. That was over 10 years ago and we've forgotten a few things. There is both food (seed) and water in the cage with him but we haven't seen him eat or drink anything. We are keeping his cage wherever we are to get him used to us and the new surrounding. He had been in a pigeon house with lots of others. Any advice in our pursuit would be appreciated.

My beloved baby, Caleb, whom I had for over 19 years, died suddenly at a routine nail clipping yesterday. She was the light of my life and I am heartbroken.

She was an African Senegal, hand-raised and tame. I got her from Kokuburros (spell?) in carrolton, tx, which I highly recommend to anyone, but they don't have any birds available for two months.
I don't think my heart can wait for two months.

I need a recommended bird seller of hand-raised birds in the Austin,Houston, San Antonio, or lastly, Dallas-Ft. Worth, area, from which to get my next bird.

I am looking for a bird of similar size such as a meyers, small macaw, a quiet conure, or Indian ringneck, or something.

Anyone??????? Help, please. I can get another Senegal, too.

i have a b&g approx. 8 years old. yesterday he did something very strange, that i have never seen him do before. he was standing on 1 leg, grabbing the base of his tail with his other leg while make a strange chattering noise (a noise he doesn't usually make.) it almost sounded like a gerbal or something. his tail was also pointing downwards. i went over to check him out and felt his tail to see if he would react in pain. nothing happened at all, he just went back to being normal and he seemed fine. i'm not sure if he's sick or if this is some ritualistic behavior i have never seen. anyone? thanks!

My guess would be a seasonal or hormonal type behavior. I haven't seen our B&Gs doing this but we do have other species that sound a lot like what you are describing when they are hormonal.

My wife and I have a 10 year old cockatiel 'Zaire'. We are planning extended travel in 2012 and are purchasing a motorhome to facilitate traveling with our dog (who loves to travel) and Zaire who prefers to go with us then to be left behind with sitters. Zaire has gone on several overnight trips to friends homes with 4-10 hr travel times one way with seemingly no ill effects. We are looking for any suggestions specifically on any changes/modifications to the motor home that we should consider to make the travel easier on Zaire.

I take care of finches myself and they are sociable by nature. They should be bought in pairs so that shouldn't be an issue at all. Finches tend to be better with a companion of their own kind. If you were to mix different varieties of finches there could be possible conflict especially during mating season. If they seem to be very stressed, probably you may have to separate the pairs.

I would recommend separating the two pairs. Finches are very territorial and may begin to fight over space as the babies hatch.
