We are looking for a source of Brahminy blind snakes. My son wants to research them for a school research/observation project. He's been in touch with a professor from UF who has approved his project, but we've been unable to find a source of blind snakes. We would greatly appreciate any sources, information or contacts!

Yesterday, I found a baby snake in my backyard, which I later identified as a Northern Ring-Neck snake. She is about 7 inches long and about as thin as a hair-tie. I kept her overnight in a small (probably around 4 gallons) tank and right now she is slithering around on my lap. She, who I am just calling a she, as I do not really know for certain, seems fairly calm around people and active, as well as healthy. Anyway, I was wondering if anybody here has experience in taking care of Ringneck snakes, especially young ones. I know that they need a 5 or so gallon tank, heating pad, day/night bulbs, good soil, among many other things like earthworms for food, but I was wondering if, first of all, they even make good pets, as well as what the best way to take care of a juvenile is, and if keeping a wild snake is worth the effort, or if I should just release it. I have admittingly never kept snakes before, though I have kept other reptiles such as bearded dragons and various tortoises, and I have always been interested in and done research on different species of snakes. Also, if you have any other tips on the husbandry of baby ringneck snakes, it would be very much appreciated. Thank you for reading and possibly replying to this, also I apologise if this is in the wrong place or something, as it is my first post on this website.

Also, where I am, it is rather cold (low 40's fahrenheight), so I would not really like to release her back into the wild, even if it is her natural habitat.

I doubt they have interest in rodents in the wild but I have heard of plenty captive individuals that would eat scented mice then switch over to unscented no problem. Have a friend in AZ that would tie a lizard then a hopper then another hopper all in a row then his night snakes would eat one each. Used to have pics that he sent me, I'll see if I can dig them up.

On the field herpers forum there was some great info. Captive nightsnakes have eaten lizards, lizard eggs, smaller night snakes, rubber boas, rosyboa (DOR baby) and frogs. It is reported that they do not eat mice in the wild, and it looks like they have no interest in pinky mice.

I acquired a Red Belly Snake about a month ago that is eating earthworms, red-worms, and slugs with out a problem. I am wandering if I can feed it small frogs? I have invasive greenhouse frogs around my house that I can feed to ribbon snakes and ring-neck snakes without an issue. Would a red belly snake take them? Thanks.

I've had southerns eat everything from ant pupae to anoles, smaller snakes to salamanders, worms, tree frogs, goldfish, I've even seen them eat guppies out of a bowl.

Jones County Longnose collected this year. So far a sporadic feeder on rodents (seems to prefer ASF over mice or rats), will eat any lizard i throw in with him.

Chris, The hatchlings are big enough to take newborn pinkie mice, but mine needed to be lizard scented. Don't let the size of their heads fool you. There have been quiet a few successful breedings. The downside is the size of the babies. Most that I've heard of have to be started on mouse tails because they are not big enough to take pinkies. I do have a source of tiny hatchling Mediterranean geckos that I will be using if/when I find a female for him and get some eggs to hatch.

Wow that is a beautiful snake. Are they difficult to breed in captivity? -- because with those colors I'm surprised I don't see them more often at reptile shows, I only ever hear of people collecting them in their locality.

Hello all, my 5 yr. old Female Ringneck stopped eating 2 months ago, had a real healthy appetite for the 2 yrs. I've had her. It's summer in South Florida, so it wasn't due to Hibernation. I had her out yesterday and noticed the area near the Anal Vent was swollen. I held her in a dish of water and gently massaged the area, some stool came out. She is hiding in the dirt right now, I'll take her out tomorrow and do this again. Any ideas how this happened? Thanks...

I think it was just a matter of having the patience to get them well acclimated, which really wasn't very easy, but worth the effort. Now my focus is on keeping the hatchlings healthy. Thanks for asking!

Thanks Tim, They are nice big babies too, and should handle pinkie mice with no problems. I'm hoping I can get them started without scenting. I ended up with two tri-color and four clarus phase from this clutch. Both parents are tri-color....

That is very, very cool. I've found a fair number of wild Longnose and have always liked their variability in colors and patterns, tameness and unusual "look."

Long time lurker, first time poster. I have a very "herp friendly" yard down here in Texas. One species that I see on a nightly basis is Tropidoclonion lineatum texanum (Texas Lined Snake). My neighbors aren't as happy about seeing herps as I am, so I routinely get asked to remove what they seem to think are "copperheads" from their yards. I am fascinated with fossorial species and have always wanted to try my hand at keeping and breeding them. Does anyone have any experience with Lined or Rough Earth Snakes? I have plenty of experience in keeping local herps (Currently, I keep Elaphe lindheimeri, Sceloporus olivaceusso, Terrapene carolina, and Bufo speciosus). I will only be going in somewhat blind. Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

I've kept plenty of Brown snakes and have really just started keeping Redbellys too recently, but a few years ago I brought home a gravid Lined snake. here's the story of that (and more) from the opposite end of Lined snake range: Minnesota!

Do you see your ringneck much or not at all?
I ask as have many in the yard but have only seen them when cutting the grass and than I go very slow and keep the grass failry short as to see them and not kill them.

I know of a male regal that has been in captivity over 20 years... It was found at about 24" which I'm sure it took 6-10 years for it to reach that size... Safe to say a ringneck could live 30 years or more.
