My corn snake is 21 years old. He has not eaten in 7-8 weeks (regular feedings had been every 2 weeks). As soon as we put him in the feed box, he dashes to climb out of it, over and over. No interest in the mice we drop in.
Then, when he's back in the cage he circles around much of the day like a maniac on caffeine. Makes a beeline for the door when it's opened.
His cage is on the cooler side - about 73F - but it's always been that way and he has a heating pad under part of the cage.
He does drink water. Yesterday we thought he was dead because buried himself partially in the bedding and was still even when we poked at him. Today he's alive and moving like a crazy snake again.
Is this snake dying? I'm not sure what to do!

The behavior is typical of a snake that is either too warm or a male that smells a female nearby this time of year. That behavior isn't really associated with a snake on its way out.
I would feed in the cage and offer a meal that is a little smaller than typical, such as a hopper or even fuzzy.
Double check temps with a temp gun or probe. If you have a female, put them in separate rooms.
Generally speaking, as a snake nears an age-related death, they will experience some pretty severe muscle wasting, no matter what they eat they lose muscle, they get sluggish, have problems shedding, and it becomes obvious.

My new ultramel tessera female who laid back on May 15th at her old owner is looking big. The older owner claims she's double clutched the last two years. Is it likely she will lay another clutch this season, and if so, when can I expect it? Thanks!!

I have a female corn who is almost 3 years old. She has always been a great when it comes to feeding (eating one large adult mouse weekly for awhile now) up until this past week. About a week and a half ago she shed. Since this shed she has been much more active in her cage moving around and looking for an escape. Her enclosure has a warm side at around 80-85 and a cool side between 70-75. Hides on both sides and fresh water. Since her shed she has not eaten although she shows a lot of interest when I display her FT mouse. Lot's of tongue flicking and following it with her head, but she is not eating. I am wondering if it might be that she is going into a mating response for this time of year but thought I would check with some of you experienced keepers. I'm not overly worried because she has eaten within the last month, and has good weight, but I am a bit concerned over this new behavior.

Thanks. Just dangled a ft and she ate it like a champ..... must have just been not hungry last week. She is out and about more, Maybe just a light cycle thing as spring hits and I'm noticing her more since I am home more often due to Corona.

Corn snakes need to be warm in order to be able to digest their meal properly. If your snake does not have somewhere warm to go to after a meal, then they might decide not to eat. ... If you can not find a reason for your snake refusing to eat, then it could be down to illness.

Hello all
I had a corn Snake that ate with no problem. I feed him last week and he regurgitated the mouse. Yesterday, I found her had died and had a green area underneath his belly about mid way along.
His temps and humidity are perfect.
He also had so bloody saliva in his mouth.
Did anyone know what may have happened.

It is a fairly crude measure but I have seen more snakes basking on the road and when out walking than previous years and crucially more on the property. I was having a tidy up and a whip snake was eyeing me up from inside the coils of irrigation pipe. Tried to move it and found it was dead! fortunately.
The cat found a juvenile viper last night on the patio. Don't mind them elsewhere but not so keen in or around the house! Shoes back on.
Any help will be apprecited.

Hey guys i'm looking to start getting into breeding corns but unsure about how some morphs are produced. For example, an opal corn. it is showing both the lavender and amel traits although both genes are recessive. So how is this possible. Any good books or websites to help get me started? I'm only 17 almost 18 and have had a passion for reptiles since. i just bought two adult females one amelanistic P het charcoal and the other a lavender. What could i breed to get some cool morphs?

My "Snow Corn" snake was always healthy. Always shed very well. I had this snake for years. And one day, both eyes became white and blind. THESE ARE NOT EYECAPS. You can plainly see that this is in the eye itself. The snake is still healthy and well in every other way. Still eats well. Only now I have to hold the mouse near the snakes face so the snake can grab and eat it. It can no longer see.
WHAT CAUSED THIS BLINDNESS? DID ANYONE ELSE HAVE THIS HAPPEN TO THEIR CORN SNAKE?

I suppose you can rule out external causes. Which means, it probably will not go away.
I kept a blind gophersnake for around 15 years, and it was an adult when I got it, already blind. They do just fine blind in captivity.

I got a baby corn snake about two or three months ago. About a month or so after we first brought her home we discovered that she has mites. We have tried to get rid of them once but it didn't work. By the time I noticed she needed to be treated again she started shedding. I was also worried because it has taken her so long to shed, I'm not sure if that's normal. She has shed halfway and there are loose scales on her head. It's not coming off in one piece. I try to make sure the humidity in her tank is right by misting it with water everyday. (I live in the desert.) I was going to try and treat her for the mites but I don't think I can if she isn't finished shedding. I think that it has also taken a while for her to shed and her eyes are not cloudy. Half of her body still has the old skin and you can see where she starts to shed. I figured she may be having trouble shedding because of the mites as well. When she first started to shed she wouldn't eat but although it looks like she's still shedding she ate just fine two days ago. What should I do?

She is having trouble shedding because she does not have localized humidity. Scale damage (minor cause by tape) will not hurt the snake - a little Neosporin will fix it.
Anyway, provide a small container, like a clean cottage cheese container and put in some damp paper towels. Put snake in, put on lid - forgot to add poke some holes in lid. Leave the snake in there for as long as it takes. Will usually take care of stuck sheds. Put in a suitably warm area - not hot, but you know - 78-82 deg area.
Since you live in a low-humidity environment, put a moist hide box (cup with hole for snake to enter, damp towels or sphagnum moss or coconut husk stuff) in the cage at all times partially in warm area.
Mites are best treated with Provent-a-Mite. Spray empty cage, let dry. Put in bedding and snake. Spray around cage and floor outside to kill wandering adults. One treatment is usually enough. I spray around my cages every 3 months as a preventative.

I forgot to add that about a month ago the thermometer that sticks to the side of her tank fell off and she got stuck to sticky side and we carefully tried to remove it but i do think it may have ripped off some scales. COuld this also be a reason she's having trouble shedding?

It means warm side of cage, either under-cage heat or air heat.
However, there must be a cooler area. Temperate-zone colubrids like cornsnakes should have an area that is cooler thatn the basking area. My advice is to shoot for 85-ish at the basking area, while the cool area can be 72-80.
Remember, snakes are on their bellies. Whatever the temp of the surface they are on, that is mostly what their temp will be. Air heat only works if the room is warm, so the cage substrate is also that temp. A ceramic heat emitter is a much better way to heat than lights. CHE heat is directed down and heats objects under it, not the air.
In Winter, let the temps get down to 55-65 and darken the cage (cover the top as well with paper or a towel, cover the sides with paper.

The easiest way to post pics is to upload them to your kingsnake photo gallery. At the bottom of the post message screen is a option box to add one or more of your gallery photos to your post.
The best way to figure out what the corn's morph is to go to a breeder's website and look through their catalogue to see if there is any thing that matches what you have.

I think cornsnakes are the nicest colubrid one can keep due to their usually wonderful demeanor and overall adaptable keeping characteristics, you can never go wrong. In captivity, I agree, 3 yrs minimum is usually best.
A few years back I was looking to get into more exotic species that were comparable to cornsnakes in terms of housing, feeding and heating. I tried Childrens and spotted pythons, and I am hooked. Fabulous snakes. If only they had cornsnake paint jobs.

Just curious if there are any breeders for corns in NC? I used to breed snow corns, and have been thinking about getting back into corns for a while. I like reverse oketees or amber/butters. I moved into BP's for a while, but my male breeder died suddenly, and I'm debating whether to replace him or simply liquidate the BP group and roll that over into Corn snakes again.
If anyone has any advice, I'm open to suggestions.
